after business matters. He reports

The regular quarterly meeting of
the M. E. church will be held here

. U.S. Cowles and wife were in from
their farm near Mud springs Saturday
attending to business , affairs. Mr.
Cowles has been appointed a deputy
stock inspector for his part of the
county. He is a member of the
Crook County Stockgrowers Association.
Surveyor L. D. Weist, D. F. Steffa,
M. F. Hudson and W. H. Brock came
over from Bend Sunday and began
work on the city survey ' Monday.
This is a matter that should have
been attended to a long time ago, but
it is gratifying to know that some
thing is being done even ut this late
dav. ,
C. VV. Colby and C. F. Holt were in
attendance at the stockgrower's con
vention Saturday. Mr. Colby com
plains very bitterly of the nondelivery
of his paper at his mail box. These

L. C. Wills arrived from Stewart,
Iowa last Saturday. Mr. Wills is u
brother of County Judge Wills whom
he had not seen for forty years,
J. E. Roberts came down from hit
stock ranch at Alkali Flat Friday and
spent.a few days in the city. This
office acknowledges a pleasant call.
Roscoe Knox was down from Post
attending the stock growers meeting
Saturday. He reports everything
moving along nicely in that section.

The Order of Washington held an
election Monday night which resulted

president; Arlington Davis, chaplain;
Herbert Hideout, treasurer.
If any on ever saw a finer day
than Tuesday he must have been in a
typical Heaven, for we poor mortals
are seldom permitted to enjoy such
days even under the most favored cir
cumstances; "Balmy zephyrs fanned
the cheek of the blushing maiden and
cooled the brow of the tired laborer,
while the scent of the buttercup and
the sage blossom was wafted abroad
through the land.
Monday afternoon the fire bell rang
out its dread warning and brought
half the town on the street iti a few
minutes, but it proved to be only a
chimney burning out in the residence
of Arthur- Hodges. The fire boys
were on the ground in short order and
had the tire been of a aeriotia nature
it would have been aulxlued Mok
much damage could have ljcen done.

J. 0. Julian came over from his
stock range on the Lower Deschutes

The Stats Land Board has failed to
ratify the' contracts with the big irri
gating companies operating on the
Deschutes and in consequence the Co
lumbia Southern people say that work
will be stopped on their extension in
to tnis county, llus company, lias
failed to take into consideration the
fact that nearly all of the support of
the road would come dnectly or in
directly from l'rineville and were giv
ing us the go by, so we are not wor
ried about the matter. What this
place nned is not the Columbia
Southern, but the electric road from
here to The Dalles.
