Sunday morning a wonderful phe
nomenon was observed by a number of
our citizens. It was nothing more or
less than eruption of Mount Jeffer
son. i tien tirst seen from tho Jour
nal office spouts of smoke were com
ing out of the top at more or less reg
ular intervals, which would float oft' to
the north and alter a few seconds rest
it would spout forth again, often rising
vertically from the top of the moun
tain to the height of perhaps two or
three thousand feet. A number of
glasses were brought to bear on the
mountain and all those looking
through them unhesitatingly pro
claimed it smoke. The smoking was
observed for about two hours after
which the mountain became envel
oped in a haze that shut out the view.
At lirst the jets of smoke would come
at intervals of one or two minutes and
continue for about the same length of
time, but at the end of the observation
they were about fifteen minutes apart.
