St, TiiBKB Months. .7,7 7.7.7. THURSDAY, JAN. 30, 1902 If J. X. Williamson is nomi nated for congress he will be elect ed, and there is not a single issue of importance to the people of Eastern Oregon that will be over looked by him. ith every phase of the stock industry he is familiar nd with almost every other in dustry ftht occupies the attention of the citizens of this district. On the lease question he Is well posted ana no tears need be entertained that ho will overlook the interests f the small stockman. He will we to it that our forests ' are pre lected and that we have an open river to the sea. Should he be elected to represent the second dis trict he will go to Washington with better idea of the needs of the district than any man yet sent from it and with a better show of obtaining what he asks for than any man jn the district. Why? For the simple reason that he will not sit still and wait for voting time without faying anything, but will be ever ready to assert hie rights and those of his constitu ents. He will go to congress with a full knowledge of the needs of this great state from his experience in the state legislature. He will go to congress with the best back ing any new congressman ever had jrom any state in the Union. Why? Beciuss he will have the hearty -operation of Senator Mitchell, than whom there is no man in our halls of national legislation better aide to aid in carrying through beneficial legislation nor more pow erful in having the material se lected for committees. With Wil liamson as chairman of the a.ri.1 land committee we could hope' for ' speedy legislation along that line. Furthermore, there is a vast differ ence between a competent, forceful, Jiggressive member of congress and a passive one. Another Version. The following clipping from the National Tribune of Dec. 26, 1901 the old soldiers' paper, which was recently handed us bya subscriber, simply confirms what was known long ago by a majority of Ameri cans who are not Anglo-maniacs. Had the opportunity arisen no iouw there would have been a rep etition of what occurred during our civil war. "The commonly-believed story that England was our only friend during the Spanish war, and by her determined attitude prevent d a coalition of the European powers in favor of Spain, has re ceived a rude shock bv the state ment of M. Hanotaux, who was then the French minister of foreign affairs. He Fays that the emperor of Austria made the first move to ward the coalition, and thut France answered that if all the other pow ers agreed to intervene she would nor stand aloof. England made precisely the same answer, and the proportion went on , swimmingly until Russia was'reached, who flat- Jy re.iii-ed to have anything to do with it, whereat the whole business eoljap.-ed. It is now in order for England to rise and explain, if she is going to continue to jday the 'only-lrue-fiicnd' rule," Political Potpourl. Senator J. N. Williamson has publicly announced his Intention to make a fight for congress in thej second district, end will seek the! nomination against Mr. Moody. j The Examiner regrets to see Mr. I Williamson leave this dristriet, but hopes he will bo nominated and elected. Lakeview Examiner. The pr ess in this congressional district with but very few excep tions, is supporting J. N. Willinison j for congress. All concede that hei is an honorable, efficient and an ag gressive worker, lie has lived in Oregon sincn r,i liivtlf to ..J1 . ..p. ...v I'll u, versed in the needs of thestato and is a popular representative of the people. Arlington Record. Editor Lueddeman, of the Ante lope Herald, and Newt Burgess were over from Antelope hist Fri day and spent the day in our city. The boys did not forget the Leader office and their call was jrreatly appreciated. JSoth are ardent sup porters of Moody and hope to see him carry off the .congressional prize. We are really sorry for them and extend our sympathy for the grief in store when the votes of the primaries in Wasco county are! counted and they find Williamson has the county. Shaniko Leader. The many Portland friends of William E. Grace, of Baker City. on the democratic side of the house, are grooming him for the conces sional nomination, believing that he will be able to give the republi can nominee, whoever he may be. the run of his life. Mr. Grace, who is a dyed-in-the-wool demo crat, has represented Baker county in the lower h-u?e of the state le;- islature two consecutive terms, running against a strong republi can each time. Hie par t successes, his friends believe, have demon strated his running powers to such a degree that he becomes not only a congressional possibility, but. de sirability. Mr. Grace is a sage pol itician and wisely says nothing He is evidently waiting for the po-j Iitical horizon to clear a little be fore declaring himself. Telegram. A Baker City dispatch of Jan. 21st says: Baker county has a can didate for the republican nomina tion for goviynor in Hon. C. A. Johns. It is a well known fact that Eastern Oregon is going to make a strenuous effort to name the head of the ticket at the next state convention and that W. J. Furnish, of Pendleton, is an avow ed candidate for the place. But this does not dismay Baker 'county. Mr. Johns says he is not seeking the office, but his friends declare he is to be a candidate, and they propose to boom him in the strict est sense of the word. Politics are beginning to warm up here, and it is hard to say what Baker county j and Eastern Oregon will ask at the j hands of the next state convention, but Mr. Johns' friends say they propose to give every assistance to the move to get the governorship for Eastern Oregon and the nomi nation for Mr. Johns. They assert that they have been promised loval support from several of the West ern Oregon counties, else (hey would not persist in brint-ine Mr. Johns out, when Eastern Oregon already has a candidate in the field.
