The announcement from Halcm that the Oregon Irrigation Compa ny, of which C. C. Hutchinson ia lirCHidcnt, htm withdrawn Its claim to 200,000 acres of arid land in the UpMr IVschutes valley, ia received with much satisfaction hy those In terested in tho development of the Deschutes country, saya the Orcgo nlan. The reason for thi with drawal in not that the company in tend! to abandon the fluid, hut that it haa arrived at an understanding with the Pilot Butte Development Company, o which A. M. Drake is president, whereby the two corpo ration! will act in harmony, instead of being in conflict. Both com pa nhi! have headquarter! in Portland. The Pilot Butte Company laid claim to only 80,000 acres, nearly all of which wai within the area already applied for by the Oregon Irrigation Company. But the; younger applicant was able to at tach a strong claim to the land it applied for, because if had gone ahead and ipent between 130,000 and $60,000 in starting an extcn tiive irrigation system, while the older company had only done what waa actually necessary to eKtabluth ita legal right! in the premises. It in laid now to be the intent of the Oregon Irrigation Company to re vise) ita claim and eliminate thoRe tract! that come in conflict with the claim of the Drake company. There are now three large recla mation enterpriaei on foot in the valley of the Deacbut the Ore gon Development Company, which la operating in the Walker Basin, near the headwater! of the river, and the Hutchinson and Drake companiea, which have locution! in the Squaw creek country and on the main itream west of Prineville. None of these concern! haa yet got the approval of the state land board, which ia necessary for tak ing advantage of the Carey arid land act, but it ii now supposed that auch approval will not be long delayed. Approval of the contract hy the itnte authorities and hy the secretary of the interior will put the enterpriser in chape for imme diate progress, for there will then lie aomcthing tangible to engage the attention " of capitalist. Consid erable investments of money will be necessary to put the reclamation projects in condition for business, and the capital will he tied up for an indefinite time, but the security ia of the best when the proper legal steps shall have been taken. A lien ia held against all the land se lected for 6 per cent interest on the cost of the reclamation improve ments. Settle Up. Davics, a stranger, went to Mill City a week or more ago to se cure work. When he arrived there he could not get suitable employ ment, and went on up to Detroit. At that place he says a men told him that there wa plenty of work at a town about 40 mile! up the road. He started but on foot with out food or blankets and was gone for five days. When he returned to Detroit he waa In a half-dazed condition and nearly famished. He tolls a tale of hardship and want that few men would haveaur vived. He sayi he went to Inde pendence prairie and from there took a trail back in the mountains until he reached a lake, probably Marion lake. There he was ao overcome with hunger and cold that he fell down In the now ex- j hausted and slept, he doea not know how long. He waa out of his mind but managed to wander around and finally returned to In dependence prairie and from there to Detroit. He waa brought to thia city Inst night and is at the Depot hotel. He was without funds or acquaintances, but Dr. Davii was called to attend him. He found that the man1! feet were bad ly frown and it will be necessary to amputate the toes on one foot and perh P " uo'h. atrange a resident of Detroit would direct a stranger into the mountains thia time of the year and ao grossly misrepresent the facts about a city being located back in the wilder ness.
