Crook County Journal. i COL'SIY OFFICIAL PAPER. THURSDAY. J AX. 9. 1902. That Ore roii KliK PectHiiw. A jury has again decided that Urown is the owner of the Oregon King mine, says the Shaniko Lead er. How such a decision could he arrived nt by 12 men who claim average intelligence, is beyond the (comprehension oi all people who have any knowledge of the facts in the controversy, and the verdict is condemned in the most . emphatic manner. This company purchased the mine in good faith; bought ma chinery, sunk a shaft GOO feet deep. tunneled at different levels, and thoroughly demonstrated beyond any question the wonderful rich ness of the mineral deposit in the Ashwood country. After all this -was done, then this man Brown coaies in and claims the mine on a mere legal technicality. And these 12 men, good and true (?), (who were selected from their fellows, no doubt, for their express igno rance of the subject at issue) and they in their wisdom brought in a verdict, that if allowed to stand, will deprive a company of mines vastly rich, which are theirs by light and justice, the verdict not withstanding to the contrary. This decision has retarded the opening and development of other mines in that vicinity which would shortly produce millions of wealth. Ashwood, as well aB all the sur rounding country, is ashamed of such a gross and ignorant decision, and well they may be, as no man knows when his mining property is Bate from some wandering inter loper. If the jury had been com posed of miners and mining men ihe decision would have been just the reverse; but Brown and his at torneys want no such jury. Heretofore the hardy, glassy wheats of the durum group have been received with but little favor in this count ry. Now, however, as a result of the efforts of the United States department of agriculture to establish these wheats, there is be ing manifested a great clmngo of merits, in view of their complete utilization in the future for the manufacture of macaroni. In Eu rope they are called hard wheats and in this country thev have not Railroad to Southern and Eastern Oregon. The Oregon and Washington pa pers seem worried about branch railroads from the S. P. R. R. line in California and Nevada invading Southern and Eastern Oregon, with prospects of being extended later on to Idaho, Montana and Wash ington for more direct connection with San Francisco, the finest sea port on the Pacific Coast. The new railroad up the Klamath river from the old Virginia ranch in this county, a distance of G5 miles, 43 ibf which is in Oregon, with steam ers for probably 30 miles further, (on Big Klamath Lake,) is open ing the eyes of Portland business men, who think the trade should go that way regardless of conven ience. Another branch road from Weed's, this county, is also likely to tap Southern Oregon, and the McCloud River railroad from Up ton near Sisson, may soon he ex tended through Modoc county to Oregon. The Nevada and Califor nia narrow gauge railroad from Reno is gradually being extended northward, and is now on the bor der of Modoc county, to continue on into Oregon at Lakeview, with connections proposed from South-, ern Idaho. Later on a direct rail road is likely to be built up into the interior north states, even to the Canadian boundary. Yreka Journal. until recently been sullioiently well known to receive a special name The term macaroni wheat given to this class of wheat by the depart ment is becoming rapidly adopted, ami its application is already pret ty well understood. Among all wheats macaroni wheats are the best adapted to re gions of intense heat and drouth. Much information relating to these drought and fungus resistant wheats is given in bulletin No. 3, bureau of plant industry, entitled "Macaroni Wheats" issued by the United States department of agri culture. It was prepared by Mark Alfred Carleton, cerealist, vegetable path ological and physiological investi gations, bureau of plant industry. The adabtability of durum wheats to the commit ns ot our semiarid districts, the market for macaroni wheats, their cultivation distribution, characteristics and ef fect of local variations in soil and climate are fully set forth, During the Beason just passed these wheats had another excellent opportunity to show their superior drought resiftance in large portions of the Northwest, where the ordi nary wheat crop was almost an en tire failure, macaroni wheat pro- duced a very lair crop of grain that was very little shriveled; while in southwet Texas, where grain growing has been uniformly a fail ure, they yielded well and produced grain of apparently excellent qual ity. It is the writer's belief that the thorough establishment of this new wheat industry will be of the greatest benefit to agriculture in the semiarid plains. A million or more of acres can thus lie given to profitable wheat raising which on account of drought have heretofore either been entirely idle or less profitably employed. In a few years time the result ought to be an addition of thirty to fifty mil lion bushels to the annual wheat production of the great plains alone. The agricultural urea will be extended much farther wc.-tward and the necessity of irrigation will thereby be diminished correspond ingly. The bulletin is illustrated with eleven plates and two text figures. Copies will be for sale by the su perintendent of documents, Union Building, Washington, I). C, when available. Hotel Princvillo.
