All that can he said concerning Miss Stone, the kidnapped mission ary, is that she is still alive and fairly well. The Bulgarian brig ands who hold her do not seem to be convinced that the $66,000 ran som which Mr. Dickinson offered them is all that was raised and all that is available for her relief, and they are holding out for the whole sum $ 100,000 originally deman ded by them. Travelera returning to Europe have, Onm time to time, brought astonishing tales of the rejuvenating effects pro duced by this Wonder of the Orient. Crudely compounded by the Women of the Harem, from formula handed down orally from generation to genera tion, the secret of this preparation thus ...jealously guarded and known only to the inmates of the Harem and the Court Physic-ans, El Messrs has been practically unobtainable, excepting by the favored ones for whom it was in tended. tecently, however, prominent na- tive Ar..b an Physician, banished from j his country for political olfcnse. and deprived of his vast possessions, has availed himself of his knowledge, to e:rn a livelihood befitting his station, by supplying this marvellous compound, J'l Mokbib, to the uobiiity and weath ier chisjBi of all Europe, who have cheerfully paid him large foes iii return for the benefits recehed. There is reason to believe that i , they were convinced of that fact, and realized that it is $66,000 or nothing for them, the brigands would accept that sum and release theircaptive. The paper is manu factured of the finest rags, cleaned, boiled and mashed into pulp. As tl is rouea into thin sheets silk threads are introduced into it by a secret process. These are tho dis tinguishing marks making' imita tkm of the paper well-nigh impos sible. The sheots of paper, already counted twice and placed in uni form yackages at the paper mill, are stored in a treasury vault and issued to the bureau of engraving and printing us wanted. Before caving the treasury they are count ed three times more, and the re: ceiving official at the bureau must receipt for them. Then the bun dies are unwrapped and the sheets are counted twenty-eight times by a corps of women. This is to in sure that each printer gets the re corded number no more, no less, If one sheet of this precious paper be lost the entire force of men ai.d women having access to the room where the misplacement has oc curred are kept in, like so many school children, to find it. Each sheet is issued from the vault for the printing of a definite amount of money upon it. If the lost sheet were intended to ultimately represent four thousand lollars' worth of notes the group of em ployees to whom the responsibility of its misplacement has been traced must make good that amount if they cannot locate it within a reas onable time. The most expensive loss which has occurred was of a blank sheet is.sued for the printing of eighty dollars upon its face. John Elfreth Wulk.ns, Jr., in the il"uary BU! "ome journal. Settlk Accounts.
