SUftSCRIPTIOH RATES. IS AllVANCr OxkYjih... MX lONT!l!l ' if Thum Months THURSDAY, OCT. 24, 1001. It is a pleasure to noto the many pood things the press of Oregon has to say of lion. J.'X. Williamson, of I'nneville. Wherever Mr. Wil liamson is known he is held in the highest esteem by the people. In whatever official capacity he has la-en placed he has filled it faith fully and to the entira satisfaction of his constituents. His name has been mentioned as the proper per koii for the Republican state con vention to nominate for a state office, and without doubt his party will see that he is placed at the front and elected to some position where he can serve the people faith- fully and well as lie has. always done when called upon in the past. Shaniko Leader. We are in receipt of the October number of the Barometer, the official organ of the 0. A. C, at Corvallis, which is replete with good things for the "outs" as well as for the "ins." It is to be hoped that the paper will meet with the favor it deserves, as it is a great aid in the upbuilding of -the col lege. The price is seventy-five cents for the school year. It will be especially interesting to Crook county people this year, for it is tinder the able business manage ment of Miss Edith Howard, of this place. Little pustules on the face of na ture, is what a Prineville paper calls the papers opposed to the in famous Hcnlp bounty law. If Crook county wishes ro kill off her coyotes let her do so at her own ex pense as Linn county did years ago. Albany Dcnocrat. From the incessant howling that continually arises from that part of the state, one would naturally infer that a very poor job of killing had been done. No one has yet stated it as a fact, but we shouldn't wonder if Pat Crowe turned out to be the chairman of that Macedonian Com mittee of brigands. What is the matter with Ven ezuelan dollars? They are now worth pnlv four cents. Can Ven ezuela also have had a "crime of '73?" It is being suggested in various portions of the state that Oregon's grand old man, George H. Wil liams, would be an excellent selec tion for governor at the next elec tion. If Juege Williams should consent to become a candidate for governor, he would roll up a migh ty majority, as the people of Ore gon have for him a profound re spect, admiration and love, and an unbounded confidence that has stood the test of years. Albany Herald. The Democrats have been point ing at on alleged" boom in ship building to prove the needlessness of the subsidy bill, but a report frorn the Commissioner of Naviga tion shows that there was a de crease in tonnage built during the last three months of 20,000 tons as compared with the corresponding ones of last year. Nearly all of our ship building, anyway, is of vessels for the coasting traffic which is exclusively reserved by the Consti.ution to American citizens. Colonel R. M. Thompson, of New Nork, in attempting to explain away Sampson's connection with the Maclay libel only succeeds in making things worse for that gen tleman. He says that Sampson was so angry at the epithets ap plied to Schley that he refused to read the rest of the book and that he therefore let his secretary finish ccr.-ecting the proofs. Deponent showeth not that Sampson made any protest to Maclay about the words that so aroused him. The War Department has at last decided to whom the credit of win ning Chickamuaga and Chattanoo jro was due. May we. hope that in another thirty-eight years tin Navy Department will decide wht. "won the battle of Santiago; Forry, Sir Thomas, that you'll have to orink your coffee out of your saucer for another yeai yet, anyway. This office is in receipt of a copy of Mining, published at Spokane, which is one of the best mining papers we have had the pleasure of perusing. Hip, Hip, Hooray! for Miss Mor ton, now Countess of Paragorie. $10 Kewarti. I will pay f 10 for information as to the whereabouts of the follow ing described horses: Ono light bay gelding, aged 10 years, and branded D on right shoulder. One dark bay gelding, aged 8 years, and branded JT (combined) on left stifle. They were lost and last seen on the head waters of McKay creek, August 15, 1901. tf F. M. Piiillii-3, Sisters, Or. , A Fiendish Attack. An attack was lately made on C F Collies of Cherokee Iowa, that nearly proved fatal. It came through hie kidney. His back got-so lame he could not stoop without great pain, not sit in a chair except propped by cushions. No remedy helped him un til he tried Electric Hitters which ef fected such a wonderful change (but he writes he feels like a new man.
