buttes Monday looking after business
matters and took out a loud of sup
plies. Milt Young, of Rosland, was a pas
tenger from Slraniko last Thursday
and left on Friday's stage for his
home.
Klkins 4 King have added a travel
ing ladder to the fixtures in their
store. It is a very handy article of
furniture.
John Combs arrived home from The
Pa lies carnival and fair Monday and
reports having had a very enjoyable
lime while there.
J F Moore, a prominent attorney
of The Dalles, came in ou Tuesday's
stage. He will spend a few weeks
here attending to business.
Circuit Court convenes October 21,
and we may expect some lively times,
as this is one of the semi annual "oc
casions" in this neck of the woods.
J R Harvey passed through here
Ia9t Saturday with his sheep, bound
for the winter range at Powell buttes.
Mr Harvey has some very Sne sheep
W T Casey was in from his farm
near Powell buttes the first of the
week and reports having had a good
yield of grain from his fields this sea
son. Rev B F Harper left Monday for
Baker City, where he goes to attend
the State Synod of the Presbyterian
Church, end also the Eastern Oregon
Presbytery.
J B Bhipp has received an order
for 21000 feet of flooring for the store
building of J P Hahn, at Culver. It
will he a two story affair with a hall
above for public gatherings.
Henry Cadle was down from his
farm on the Ochoco last Friday and
ordered the Journal sent to his son,
Alph. who is attending school at the
Willamette University at Salem.
C E McDowell left last Friday for
Brov.nsville, where he will transact
business matters, and then return,
bringing Mrs McDowell's mother, Mrs
King, home with bini for the winter.
C Sam Smirli was down from his
farm on Upper Oohoco, Saturday, and

The flouring mill has been doing a

H J Healy wus in from Haystack
Monday with his last load ot grain for
tne season. He reports the ground a
little dry fur deep plowing, but a great
deal of grin is being sowu in that
section.
J B Claypool sent us a pota to from
hie Squaw creek ranch that is a beau
ty if not as large as some. It meas
ures 10 in length by three and one
fourth indies iu diameter. It was
raised without irrigation and. speaks
well for that put of tho country.
Mrs. Frank U Davis arrived from
Portland Saturday to attend her hus
band, who has been suffering from an
attack of pneumonia, but who is much
better at present and will soon be out
again. Mr Davis is one of tin most
popular "boys" on the road and we are
all glad to learn of his recovery.

W W Brown, the Wagontire stock
man, came in Thursday and spent
yesterday attending to business here.
Mr Brown recently visited the East
for the purpose of investigating the
horse market. He reports that while
it is not the best,' very good prices

Charley Lewis was down from Up
per McKay Satuaday, where he ia
teaching a six months term of school,
and informed our reporter that he i
getting along nicely. He is teaching
the ninth grade in his school, the on
ly school in the county haviug that
grade.
C. 0. Bethel was in from his ranch
at Powell buttes Monday and inform
ed our reporter that he had brought
his sheep in from the summer range
and the grass was in fine shape on his
winter range. A few weeks of such
weather as we have been having for
the past few days will make the best
winter feed there has been for years.
Anson A Foster, formerly of this
vicinity, but now of Paulina, Crook
county, accompanied by his bride,
arrived here September 22, to fpend
a few days with relatives, and to assist
his father in getting ready to move to
Crook county. They will all leave
for their new home Thursday. Leb

William Gulliford died at Halsey
October 3. Mr Gu lliford was a pio.
neer sheeep and cattle man of this
county and was well known here. He
leaves three daughters and two bro
thers in this county, they are, Mrs
Gus McCord, Mrs Pole Lafollett and
Mrs Ida Prose, and Jake and Jus
Gulliford.
8 J Newsom returned Saturday
from a visit to Salem and Portland
where he had accompanied John and
Gail on their return to school. At
Salem, Mr Newsom met a brother he
had not seen for 2j years, and had a
very pleasant visit. This brother is
the man tor whom the famous New
som creek mining district in Idaho
was named.

George Ray, a prominent farmer
and stock raiser of the Horseheavcn
country, had the misfortune to get
his left arm broken last Saturday bv
a horse throwing him off. He had
just completed branding a number of
calves and mounted his horse to ride
to the house when the animal began
bucking and a brokeu arm was the
result.

On September 1, 1901, 1 took charge
of the Hotel Prineville, and have re
furnished the house throughout, bed
rooms, dining room and kitchen, and
otherwise improved the house.
I have closed the Vienna Cafe, and
in doing so, desire to thank my many
patrons for their patronage for the
past three years and hope to see you
all again at the Hotel Prineville.
The house will be run on American
plan and rates will be (1.00,, 11.50
and $2. per day.
Our accommodations cannot be
surpassed in the city.
