    RESOLUTIONS
Passed by Harney Co.
Stock Association
Oppose Land
Leasing
Tha Resolutions Were Passed
a Unanimous Voto,
Lusk's Letter.
by
Hums Tinien-Hi'nilil.
Tho Harney County Sttx-k Asso
ciation met last Saturday afternoon
nt tho court bouso and passed rt-so-lntions
opposing any tow providing
for the lousing of th public range.
A communication from F, C. Lusk
was read at the ojH'iiing of the
jneeting in which ho appealed to
the association to not ho preju
diced by the farming clement and
especially by tho newspapers of this
section, who opposed the measure
on the ground that it would retard
settlement, lie urged them as
Ktockmen to Consider their own
interests and not to liSen to those
who desire to see the country devel
oped. We really gave Mr. Lusk the
credit of being smoother man than
to expose his hand in the manner
in which he did. He said nothing
of his great interest in the develop
ment of Harney county as in his
communications lor puhl.cation,
nor did he say that it would bene
fit anything or anybody outside
the stock interests. The sheep
business was entirely ignored, also,
and his letter showed plainly that
what the National Cattle Growers
Association wanted was to control
the range for tho special benefit of
the cattlemen.
Immediately after the reading of
Mr. Lusk's letter, the report of the
comittee, appointed at a previous
meeting to draft resolutions, was
read and unanimously accepted.
Following is the report:
.Whereas: A bill ' is to be intro
duced in the next Congress author
izing the government to lease
the public domain or ranges of the
Western States, and
Whereas: The land laws now in
force are liberal enough to enable
any person to gain title to all of the
land sufficent for all ordinary pur
poses, and,
Whereas: Such a bill if passed
'will be a dangerous act and detri
mental to all small live stock grow
ers and also retard tho pectlement
of already sparsely settled ter
ritorv, and.
Whereas: Such a-bill is more lia
ble to be framed for the benefit oi
large sheep and catlle 'syndicates
and enable them to gain control of
all our valuable public lands.
Therefore be it,
Kos-jlvcd, That the Harney
County Live Stock Association is
emphatically opposed to anv hill
being introduced or passed try con
gress authorizing the government
to lease or sell any of the public
domain and that no person shall
bo allowed to own or control any of
ll)3 public lands except by the,
heuiLcent laws now on our statutes,
and, bo it further
Resolved: That the. members of
the Ila-ney County Live Stock as
sociation will endeavor by all hon
orable means, to defeat any candi
date for Congress, at our next
ebK-iiun, who will favor any such
bill, regardless of politics;
