W Wiley, of Post, loft for Wil lamette points last Friday. Harry Ladd, of Arlington, was in town last week with E. Jaoobsen. Mrs. Slayton has just brought on a large stock of late fall millinery goods. H. D'msdale and Clarence Morgan were down from Paulina tlio lirst ol the week. It. A. Dunn was over from Grass Valley last week looking after buti litss mutters. John Combs sUrted for Tho Dalles Sunday, where he will take in the carnival and fair. Councilman Will Wurrweiler left lor Portlaud Tuesday morning, for a brief business visit. L. C. Terry was down from his Des chutes ranch the iirst of the week looking as jovial as ever. Walter and Charles Parish nd Leon n Curtis were up from Hay creek tot tint of the week ou business. Geo Hendricks, a farmer and stock raiser of Haystack, was a busiuess visitor in our city last Saturday. John and Gail Newsoni left last week for Portland where they will pur sue their studies for another term. The voting contest is over and Miss Knox is the most popular teacher in Crook county by a handsome majority. J. W. Shattuck and A. B. Witter, stock raisers of the east end of the county, were down from Crook Satur day. J. H. Wigle has let the contract for the construction of a neat Cottage in the south end of town to Geti & Den- liison. Alex Escalle, John Davine and Ernest Ray were down from Paulina the first of the week after a load of tupplies. Fred Eice and Clarence Montgome ry, of Brownsville, passed through heie last week bound for Harney val ley points. Mrs. M. A. Nicholson, mother in law of C. W. Colby, arrived Friday lrom Albany and will make her home in tliis county. Col. M. C. Nye is greatly improving the appearance of his city pioperty by constructing an ornamental picket fence around it. L. V. Tice was down from Price the first of the week and has about re covered tlie use or nis leg that was broken last summer. S. E. Slayton sold a lot of his cattle Monday to Sam and Harry Doutnit of Cross Keys. Mr. Slayton is going out of the cattle business. J. G. Julian was a visitor from the Matole country lust Friday mid re . ports the feed in excellent condition in that part of the county. George Eay was down from his ranch on Upper Crooked river the first of the week and reports the ground in fine condition for fall plowing. J. A. Klum, ft native of the wooded elopes of Linn county, was a visitor in the city last week and says that he intends wintering in Sodaville. ' C. T. Lillard and Jerry Merritt were down from Fife the first of the week attending to business matters and taking in the sights of the city. Lew McCnllister was down from the Cvhoco mines the first of the week ttml reports things moving along in the even tenor of their ways in that section. Crook county is now out of debt and has money in the treasury. The treas urer's notice calls for all warrants J. C. Abbott and family, of Wapin- itia; were in town last Dummy, mt. Abbott was formerly owner of the Suplee hot springs. Clarence Lister left tor Salem hvt week and intends entering tlie medio al department of the Willamette University at that place. A. H. Capper, Joe F. Dwyor and E. Khenstrom, three well known knights of the grip, were "doing" the business houses of our city this week. R. A. Stewart, the Upper lieavur creek sheep man, was down from In ranch hut Saturday on business, and reports stock looking fairly well, M. F. Hawthorn came in from Lava on business the first of tin week and informs us that everything is moving along smoothly out that way at present. G. C. Prieeand daughter Edna came down from Price Saturday ana went on to Salem, where Miss Price will re main for the winter with her uncle, Judge Wulverton. Arthur Hodges and family returned last Thursday evening from an ex tended visit with relatives and frieuds in Salem, McMinnville and Portland. They report a very pleasant trip. Geo Gibson, of Post, was in town last Saturday, ami informed our re porter that he is contemplating an ex tended business trip to Harney and Malheur county points. Miss Ethel Philiber left on Monday's stage for Baker City where she will visit for a time with her father and then take a post graduate course in The Dalles or Salem schools. C. M. Elkins and family returned last Friday from Lyle, Wash., where Mr. Elkins has been in charge of his brother Collins' business while the latter was absent in Chicago. Harve Summerville and wile ac companied by his wife's sister, Miss Wilson of Fife, are over from Coburg, visiting friends and in this county, and looking aftei business interests, Mrs. W. L. Lyons, of Post, whs visiting with Mrs. B. F. Harper laM last week. She was enroute to join her husband at Hay Creek, whero he has a position with the B. S. & L. Co?! C A. Xewbill was a caller at this office Tuesday morning and renewed his subscription for another year. Mr. Newbill is one nf the pioneers of the Willow creek section of this country. E. A. Parker, of Price, returned Saturday fron an extended visit with relatives at Albany. lie wns r- companied by his brother, who will rusticate in the wilds of Crook county for a few weeks. Mrs- C. A. Whitsett has sold her stock of millinery goods to Miss Ethel Swearengen who has opened up in the Moore building. The business will be under the supervisien of Miss Essie Swearengen for the wintei. G. W. Noble was down from Beaver creek the latter part of last week at tending to business. G. Collver was in from Culver Monday and informed the Journal that the fine farm residence of J. K McMeen near Lamonta, was burned Friday evening with all of the con tents excepting a few minor articles. The building was almost new and finished in modern style and well furnished.
