On the day of President MeKin ley'e funeral, the Journal of New York, had a striking cartoon repre senting the countries of Europe as shadowy men riding uncovered shadowy steeds behind the hearse bearing the body of the dead presi dent. It is entitled, "His Last Journey." It brings to mind im pressively the old poem of the "Midnight Review;" and is, of course, but putting an old thought in form of an object lession. But looking at it as the Salt Lake Tri bune does, the first thought is, were they all the shadowy ones that joined the great procession? The pathos of the blameless man's death was enough to thrill the others. Who knows but the old guard was there? The president is commander-in-chief. Who knows what whisper went around on the farther campiug ground? "The commander-in-chief is dead. Fall in!" Was the Silent Man of Donelson there, or the tall form of Sherman; or the little invincible Sheridan, as on that day at Cedar Creek; or Crook the trusted, or Hancock the superk; or Hooker, who met the brunt of the onset on that bloody field of Antietam and all the old royal host who ranked the sargent and the major in the war, but who last ranked them all but one?. 'Where all the immortal spirits in line with shadowy bugles cal ing in the tones of the beyond and and muffled shadowy drums beat ing softly on those echoless shores? Who knows? And why limit the inquiry to the Union side? The grass and flowers are growing on the sods beneath which the soldiers sleep, and the dreadful animosi ties of forty years ago are dispelled. Wo knows but Lee was there and Stonewall Jackson and Hill and Pickett and Polk, and all that host who made the vain essay to turn back the light the republic was casting over an oppressed world; who tiicd to turn it back, and died by tens of thousands in the hope less effort? Why should they not have been there? When one stops to think and listen, it seems as though tie heard far away hint strains of martial airs; the flapping of innumerable flags: the muffled roll of invisible drums, and there are flashings as though of sun beams, on helmets, the wheeling of fiery battlions with all the old pomp and circumstances; what wonder if the long rank of blue and gray were all in line, all salut ing, for had not a master spirit fled? Who knows? None return, no sentries challenge is heard from the heights, no flashing flags are seen. There is faith and a hope that grows to be a mighty longing, but what there may be is not for Dort.il eyes to see or mortal ears to hear. England now say that modern America is perverting the original Monroe Itcctrine. We don't think fo. but if it i-, we are satisfied villi th;; perversion. Anyway, v.e shiurt ask Great Britain to in terpret it for us. " Of course, real Americans know perfectly well that the men who cartoon our Presidents do not real ly believe what they assert, and consequently, are little moved by the scandalous pictures and insults that appear in the yellow journals. Ther forget, however, that the ig norant hordes from Europe do actually Mieve them and are al ways fikely to le incited to murder thereby. The steel strike is settled; it ought never to have been begun, and would not have been had it not been for President Shaffer's over weening ambition. Now New York has added to her sky scrapers by burrowing several stories under ground. New York ers need not he in such a hurry to get down to their uleimate destination. A Missouri mob recently aband oned a lynching because it could not catch the right negro. Civili zation is certainly making progress in Missouri. According to census figures, New York has 5,257 Iudians not counting Tammany. Those who say that Welling ton's sense of decency will cause him to resign from the Senate are not acquainted with the man. 8tepped Into Live Coa'.a "When a child I Imrnod my foot frightfully," writes W H Kads, of Jonesville, Vs., "which caused horrl lie leg Hores for 30 years, but Buck ler!1 Arnica Salve wholly cured me after everything else failhd."
