Under the new scalp bounty law over 118,000 has been p.id out of tho treasury since Feb. 20. What a fine governor Williamson would make for the taxpayers of Oregon. And just think of a legis lature that would pass such a law. It is said that Scalp Bounty Williamson will now try for the Secretaryship of State. A man who can pass a bill which robs the taxpayers of 1100,000 for absolute ly nothing should get something. The above effusion is taken from the Jefferson Review, & little in significant "patent outside" Fpasm produced periodically at a little wayside resort on the Santiam bot tom in the lonesomest corner, of Marion county. . The editor of the aforesaid sheet is so short sighted that he doe.-n't know there is any other place outside of Jefferson, where the only "varmints" need ing a scalp bounty are pollywogs, polecats and pnakes. Xo doubt had a bounty been placed on the latter it would have pleased the Review man for it is evident that lit- has been troubled by them fre quently ' , In the first place the article is contradictory on its face and be sides it is incorrect in every parti cular. Instead of the scalp boun ty robbing the state it has added many thousands of dollars to its wealth. In the second place, ad mitting that $18,000 has been paid by the state, how can it be robbery when it is simply paid out to the people of the state to be paid back by them in taxes on the property that has been saved from the jaws of the hungry coyotes that would otherwise have destroyed ii? Furthermore, Williamson did not pass this law unaided and he will get something, nor will it be a jag from the good brothers demi john. In one place our learned friend says the legislature passed the law utid- in another that Williamson jassed it, , from which we judge him to be a past master of assini iiity, but perhaps we err, he may be only a plain every day John donkev. When Williamson the editor that you friends visiting you. have somo I Prottv soon Shaffer will take his place with Debs, Irons, and the; rest of the long roll of those who; have led labor "unions to ruin I through their own personal inordi-, nnte ambition. After a much longer time, labor organizations will loam not to entrust their in- j terests to flighty indivulnals whose i only recommendation is a facile! tongue. Itut it will be a long time i before then. j ' Eastern Oregon is demanding ' several of the state offices. Time was when we could take our little; Eastern Oregon brother by the; slack of the pants and the scuff of the neck and throw hira over the fence into the cow thistles, and jeer at him to boot, but the Eastern brother has grown big and sassy, and now demands better treat ment at the hands of his webfoot brother, and he is now physically able to make it extremely tropical forhis hilhorto rather uppish kins man.
