Out in Lincoln, Nebraska, part of the population prayed for rain anil the other part fired bombs to Iiroduce it, while the Weather Bu reau predicted fair weather. Now the three are scrapping as to which brought on the storm. The editoTofThTs rag has hap his outing and, greatly refreshed therefrom, is ready for another year's collaboration with the scis sors and past pot. Our recrea tion consisted in eating a chicken dinner that was cooked on a camp fire in the back yard.-Harney County News, What can the Government do. The most important witnesses ugainst Neeley flatly refuse to tes tify, and tlK-re-is no power m the laml to compel them io do so at the behest of the .Cuban govern ment. Yet some people will teep abusing the War Department for not bringing him to trial with out witness-is. Most Republicans agree that there, really ought to be some changes in our tariff laws. But experience has shown that a few changes connot be made without opening up the whole tariff ques tion, disrupting business condi tions and causing heavy losses. Better let well enough alone. BEN TIME NT IS STRONG. The sentiment in favor of East ern Oregon being well . represented instate political affairs i fast crystalizing. In fact, it has gained great strength during the last six months and will become an impor tant factor in the shaping of poli tical matters between now and the time of holding the state conven tion and in the selecting of men as candidates .'or the various state ofticcs. Portland, Falem and oth er West End cities may attempt to hewilder Eastern Oregon poli ticians and to drive wedges that will split our county delegations. They will doubtlass try to belittle our strength but should they at tempt to get on without us they may find slips betwixt cups and litis before the convention is over. it is not Eastern Oregon's purpose , to antagonize other parts oi me state politically. The region this side of the Cascades "wants only what is fair and it has reached Mich a stage in its development "that it can demand iU rights' Our heads are set and we know . what we want. We are not "foolin' " a bit. We are complaining because wo have cause for complaint not because we enjoy it, We are mak ing demands on reasonable grounds -iind not because an opportunity is offered. This part of Oregon not only' desires a share in the man iige.nent of the state's business but i: has principle and objects of its own that are close to its heart. Recently the one-mindedness of the people of Eastern Oregon oi: this subject : become very ap parent, (io whore one will he finds a strong sentiment for a fair representation on the state repub lican ticket. It is a conceded fact tliat the oimties this side of tin Cascades will be united for next springs campaign, and properly commanded they will break through some of the pauses of tin Cascades and capture some of the strongholds of the Willamette val ley. Pendleton Tribune. PUFFS OUR SENATOR. The Pendleton Tribune of Au gust 11 prints a very fair cut o. lion. J.N, illiaiuson ami gives him the following write-up: Senator J. N. Williamson live; at Princville, Oregon. He Is a na tive oi this state, and was bom in Lane county in 1855. His par ents crossed the plains in 1853 and moved to Salem in 1804. Ai that place Senator Williamson at tended the public schools and Wil lamette university until 187G when he came across the Cascades and settled at Prineville, Crook county. Since that time he has been en gaged in stock raising except dur ing three yearB. In 1893 he pur chased two democratic newpapers at Prineville which he united un der the name of the Prineville Re view and edited it as a republican paper until 18!)C. Htj has always taken an active part in the indus trial and political affairs of his own and adjoining counties. In 1886 he was elected sheriff of Crook county, and to the legislature in 1888. He was again elected to the lower house in lS'JS. In 11)00 he was elected joint senator from Wasco, Crook, Lake and Klamath counties which position ho now holds. Senator Williamson has been prominent in the legislature of the state as an advocate or op ponent of a number of important bills and he has always devoted particular effort toward the inter ests of Eastern Oregon. He re tains his political strength but modesty disclaims any aspirations for greater recognition from his friends or the republican party. He believes that Eastern Oregon should receive its share of the state political offices and his influence and labor for this part of the state will be valuable in the next cam paign. tVfltVrtl'i iMttiiiW ,hf rtrija Ih't"1 T tmmmmitiwmm. w m i3 P 11 COOL You don't have to go to the Arctic regions to be refreshed.
