Gates did not fly the track like Gill, but he probably would have been tat ter off. During the next three years, he can while away the hours reading Col. Anyway he can reflect on the past and figure how main kinds of a fool he was playing sucker for senatorial aspirants, and hobnobing with Col. Hofer and Col. I'oorman in the library. Ex. Experiment With Brome Grass; In one of J. 11. Cross' show win dows is a small sheaf of Brome grafs that was brought to town by George Arnold of Chcnowith creek. The grass averages fully four feet in length and its tops are heavily loaded with seed. The sheaf is a sample taken from a patch of four and a half acres that was seeded in April a year ago. The patch is on tlie ridge between Clienowith and Mill creeks, which is fairly representative of the dryest soil in the neighborhood of The Dalles. This year it was cut for the first tune and in that part of the patch where a reasonably good stand was obtained there was a vie'd of from a ton and a quarter to a ton and a half to the acre. Mr. Arnold is very much pleased so far with the result of his experiment. He is satisfied that Brome grass will tand any reasonable amount of trampling. In point of fact he is inclined to think that trampling agrees with it for it is markedly the-best where wagons and teaim had gone over it the most. And lastly and liest of all eattlo ur d horses eat it with marked avidity whether in. lay or pasture. Cliroaiclo. Arrive Prinevillc, Oa. m. Arrive Shaniko, l a. m. ; i- harder Shop. The Old Goer Homestead. A correspondent in the Salem Statesman says: Harry Cook, Sup ervisor at the asylum farm, spent Sunday at Willard. While here he took several snap shots! with his camera, of the old R. C. Goer homestead. This place has boen in the Geer family for more than half a century and has been pic tured far more than any other spot in the vicinity. Just over the hill, half a mile away, is the birth place of Homer Davenport, sketch artist for the New York Journal, and half that distance will bring the traveler to the birthplace of Frank Bowers, who is working in the same line on the Indianapolis News. Both spent a great deal cf their time, during their boyhood days, at the old Geer house with their grandparents. It has been the custom of Mr. Davenport to spend a part of his yearly vacation near the place where the old home stands, and next to his own home, this spot is dearest to him. Governor Geer, too, at one time, made this place his home, and al though the house is vacant, he still visits it occasionally and marks the changes time has wrought.
