Last Monday the Chinese residents
of this city celebrated their New Year
by Inviting everybody to a fine dinner
at the Prineville Hotel, to which invi
tation nearly 200 people responded.
They also gave each pu pil in the city

every smoker in town a good cigar.

allowed the carrier on each trip, if the

That such service will be greatly ap
preciated in these sparsely settled re

only wonder ia that the svstcm was
not adopted long ago.
Crooked river was higher but Sun
day morning than it haa known foi
years. Many bridgee have been
washed away and roads damaged.
Fuller & Co. lost quite a number of
fat hogs at their feeding pens on the
river bottom south of town by their
being waahed away and chiflrd to
death in the water.. Had not the
weather opportunely turned colder
great damage might have been done
as both bridges west of town were on
the point of giving way. The heavy
rain and snow which haa since fallen
will be, notwithstanding the wsshsots
of immense value to the farming aud
stock interests as the former thorough
ly saturated the soil and the latter
will afford abundant water for irriga
tion next summer.
The spectacle of the Oregon legisla
ture being held up every two years by
tome senatorial aspiraut whose money
is his chief attribute of fitness is be
coming exceedingly stale and trying
ts the eyes of honest men. Admit
that Corbet t is a statesman; admit
that his financial ability is unequaled;
that his honesty and integrity are
above reproach ; admit that he is the
! equal in every respect of any A her as
pirant and the fact remains that the
people do not want him. Should lie
be elected he will have bought the
place, defrauded the people of their
choice, debauched the legislature and
debased himself. The gang of hire
lings that surround and the legislators
who are carrying a part of his wealth
in their inside pockets are but mer
cenary tools who should have no place
in a republic We have no prejudice
against Coibett as a citizen but against
his political methods we are unalter
ably opposed. Better no senator from
Oregon than to have the name of
having been bought, body, soul and
breeches.
