The report of the committee of busi ness men sent to Mexico to investigate the property of the Chiapas Rubber Plantation and Investment Company has just been made pnblio. The docu ment is an interesting one and gives valuable data concerning the enterprise conducted hi the compuiy named. The property of the company consists of a plantation of 34.000 acres of the choicest rubber land of Mexico, upon which over TOO. 000 vioroas young irnbber trees now thrive. On the plan tation also are numerous mahogany tees, some of which are of pi editions fro win. thus demonstrating the rich oess of the soil. DarinK Klplorcr Tlelda Life in Search of Far-A waT Arctic Pole There No New. of th. Missing Mm During the Paat Four Tear. It is now nearly four years since S. A. Andree, the Swedish aeronaut, in his balloon rose In air on Amsterdam isl and and confidently set out for the north pole. To him was attracted at once the hopeful and the anxious notice of both the scientific and the unscien It was the most tific in every country. .,ni.,rriiv .Lirinir attempt ever con ceived of In aeronautics and It abso lutely eclipsed all previous enterprises conducted in ships and looking to the discovery of the north pole. Mr Andree had been known as an aer onaut' for twenty years, but he was somethius more than tbat. He was a theoretical mechanic, whose theories were believed to be more sound than anv other niau's In Sweden. He was Indeed more than a theorist he had accurate knowledge of the practical arts and inventions of bis time. So well were his knowledge and abilities known that the Swedish government appointed him chief engineer of the patent office. These facts, belug gen erally In possession of the world public. strongly predlsiwsed a large part of that public to believe that he would be successful In his surpassing aeronautic undertaking. Nor was the Idea of cross ins 'o the pole in a balloon a new one. DEPARTURE OF It was of French origin and first con--elvd by SlveU who In 1S73 laid his project before the French Society of Aerial Navigation. But S:ve! lost his life soon afterward in the accident to the balloon Zenith. The project lay la abeyance until 10. when It was taken up again by two Paris aus Herm te and Besancon who submitted a plan that was carefully and scientifically thought out to the mlnntest detail, but the means could not be raised to carry tne plan Into even experimental effect. Mr. Andree. however, carefully exam- ned It ar.d compared bis own with It ind studied the design for the balloon that was not built. I"roud!y and majestically the balloon ose and Andree gazed with happy con .ldence on those who remained behind, and then he and his comrades, waving their caps, be cried out, -Greetings at home to Sweden." To Communicate with the World. Andree. when he started on his bal loon voyage on July 11. in;7. took with him twelve dispatch buoys, each con taining a sphere of cork twenty centi meters in diameter, coated with a thick coat of paint, partly blue and partly yellow. At the upper portion was a eopier stopper Inscribed witu the words. "Andree's Polar Expedition. li." and a number. This stopper closed a cavity cut In the cork, to re ceive a tube In which documents or messages from the explorers were to he Inclosed. The buoys were to be thrown out at different points of the voyage of the balloon. A thirteenth larger than the others, was to be left at that point of the route that should be nearest to the geographical pole tbat could be reached by the balloon. The explorer also took with him thir ty-two carrier pigeons. Some were ex pected to return to Dane's Island, where they had stayed for more than a month, but It was feared they would never return to Sweden, as from Spltz bergen alone they would have had to travel n distance of nearly 2,'iOU kilo- meters in ordi-r to find their dove cote. From the pole to Sweden would be 3.S00 meters. Such a distance has, as far as Is known, never been traversed by carrier pigeons. After these means of conveying messages had been ex hausted Andree would naturally have recourse to the familiar method of In closure In bottles. Three days after starting a seal hunt er to the west of Phlpps Island, north of Spltzbergen, killed a carrier pigeon which had come from Andree's balloon. From the pigeon this uiessnge was takcu: July 13 12:30 o'clock noon. latitude S2 degrees 2 minutes, longitude Id de grees & minutes east. Good speed to ward the east; ten degrees to south. AH well on board. This ! the third pigeon tbat we have sent out. ANDREE. This dispatch Indicated that the bal loon had only t-aveled a fifth of the distance separating Spltzbergen. from the pole, and that It was no longer go ing toward the north, but toward the east. About July 22 of that year It was learned from the captain of a vessel that one of the crew had shot a pigeon between North Cape and-Seven Islands, on the north coast of Lapland, bearing a message addressed to tne Aftenbla det. Stockholm. It read: Eighty-two degrees passed. Good Journey. Northward. ANDREE. From Kasnovarsk, whence a dispatch stated that on Sept. 14 at 11 o'clock at night, people In the village of Antzl flrowskoje. In the district of Yeneseisk, saw the Andree balloon for five mln- utes. It Is certain that Mr. Andree did not .take sufficiently Into account all the meteorological conditions. But at least four learned professors did take them into view on their comments at the time on Xtr. Andree's daring venture. Professor Bexold held that as the winds at the pole cross one another a direct passage could not be hoped for. He argued that the distance the aeronaut must travel would be extended from 3.400 kilometers (the distance In a di rect line from Spltzbergen across the polar region) to from 12.000 to 20,000 kilometers, and that the balloon could not possibly keep afloat long enough for that. But should this cot prove true, the professor continued, be thought tt very possible that Andree might sail over the polar regions without knowing It, since it is precisely In that part THE EAGLE. where the usual methods of navigation are likely to be faulty and dlfflculty would be experienced In determining one's whereabouts. These difficulties. b pointed out. consist not In the ab sence of the mesns of help afforded by the stars, but also In the fact tbat the midnight sun, even if It be not veiled for hours and days In a: 1st. alters Its altitude so little that the exact moment of noon, so Important for taking obser vations, cannot be determined. The rapid changes of longitude, moreover, which the balloon must make would render the operation of observation ad ditionally difficult. Even should An dree succeed In crossing the pole, an extraordinary concatenation "of favor able circumstances would. In Professor Berson's opinion, be necessary to ren der a safe landing possible. Professor Neumayer, of the admlral :y office, did not agree with those who regarded Andree's venture as a pure set of suicide, but be emphasized the Impossibility of prognosticating In any degree the direction the balloon would follow. Though not r:iy!n? tbat the voyage might be scientifically useful, he failed to see bow Andree could make the necessary meteorolog ical observations at the time he should believe himself to be crossing the pole. Tedious Waitlne for News, Definite news was expected to be re ceived of Andree before he bad been many days out. for. as has been stated, be was prepared with supposedly relia ble means of communicating with the lower world, but days passed and no news came. A mourn elapsed and still no news of him out of which anything much could be made. Then Andree's friends and the scientists and the pub lic began to feel great anxiety. Six weeks elapsed and as nothing was heard of the aeronaut that could be credited, an expedition was sent out by the Swedish Geographical and An thropological Society In search of An- PROI1AI1I.K FATE Or ANIIRK1 dree. This expedition renched the neighborhood of the Lena delta, where a most perilous portion of the Journey lay before them. There they built a boat and lu the necessarily frail craft crossed the open sea to the mouth of the Olenck and thence proleeded to the new Siberian Islands, where. It was be lieved, traces of the Andree expedition might be found. But no traces were found and the searchers made thlr way back to Sweden as best they could. Since then the search has In various ways been continued, but all without avail. Imagined or faked reports of An dree's safety and exact whereabouts have from time to time been sent over the world, whose effect has been to keep alive In many people the hope that he may yet be found alive. But the opinion of the most Is that be was lost but a few hours or possibly days after his floating away from the sight of his friends, and yet If such were the fact it would seem strange that some Indis putable evidence was not long ago dis covered. But It la not so strange that no evidence of the disaster has been discovered, as would be Andree's sur vival after all these years In the polat region. And now again men of science and meteorological observation are go ing over the known facts and so long after the almost certain catastrophe are able satisfactorily to themselves to es tablish that Andree was Ignorant or dlsregardful of meteorological condi tions and that he was more foolhardy than any of his predecessors had been. And this appears to be true enough. SOUVENIR OF A TRAGEDY. Lorarnette Presented to m Senator's Wife by Booth. The daughter of a United States Sen ator has a lorgnette which was pre sented to her mother by J. Wilkes Booth. The story, which Is now print ed for the first time. Is as follows: Booth rented a room the night before the assassination In the Washington Hotel, where Henry Clay died. The house was crowded with guests, and the corridors after dinner were filled with women of note and beauty. Booth, who waa fond of admiration, commin gled with the assemblage, and was pre sented to many. He carried a hand somely mounted lorgnette which a Sen ator's wife complimented. She knew the Booth family, Edwin Booth having been a guest at her home. This fact waa sufficient warrant for J. Wilkes Booth to be unusually gracious, and when the Senator's wife admired the actor's lorgnette be begged the favor of presenting It to her. The following night occurred the tragedy. In the pre liminary investigation which followed the Senator's wife and another woman who waa with her the evening she met Booth were subjected to a most rigid Inquiry as to Booth's manner. The daughter of the Senator's wife, now a prominent society woman of ber home, tells this story In connection with the Investigation: "My poor mother waa questioned and croaa-questioDed by a lawyer and a de tective touching her meeting with Booth. But she was unable to give them any Information concerning Booth's manner except tbat he waa gal lant. Hard as they tried to learn any thing from her, she could remember nothing showing that Booth contem plated crime, nothing Indicating that he ever thought of such a thing. He wss In a Jovial mood and spoke of some fu ture events with confidence. I do not think my mother ever quite recovered from the effects of the incident. She kept the lorgnette for some years, never using It. however, and ntly she pre sented It to me. I am not supersti tious, but I bave never yet tried to ue this lorgnette that something unusual did not occur. The first night I carried t my horse had an accident which made us late In arriving at the theater, and when we got there we found the play postponed. Once tt waa misplaced and suddenly turned cp. On another occa sion It was loaned to a friend, who was taken 111 In her box and nearly died be fore she got borne. I still have It. but I bave never used It. although I mean to some day." Live on Five Cent a Day. Five cents a day is the cost of living among the Ilusklnltes, or members of the socialist colony, which, after be coming somewhat famous In Tennes see, was transported to a site near Wnycross. Ga., where It now flourishes. Co-operation Is the secret of these re markable economic conditions. By combining exercising thrift, discre tion and a good deal of self-denial the 5 cents daily expended purchases enough to keep each Kuskinlte robust and cheerful. The bill of fare that results Is by no means palate-tickling, but It Is adequate and hygienic, and the Kusklultes say they like it. Any one might, living in the open air and exercising vigorously. In any case, they are proud of having demonstrated something. They are living on the lowest dally expenditure tbat Is possi ble, and that Is a triumph of a sort. Here Is an outline of the fashion In which this economic miracle Is accom plished: All xirovlslons are Iniught at whole sale and In large quantities. They are then cooked In the community kitchen and cooked, of course, by the colonists. Soclnllsts do not employ servants. When, cooked the food Is served in the community dining room, where tables are set for 300 persons. Vegetables are the chief article of the Kuskinlte diet, and as they are raised by the community Itself they are abun dant and cheap. In seasons when few er vegetables are produced the da.'ly cost of living Is Increased from 3 to 7 cents. Grace "I thought you were never going walking with that Snaggs?"
