which is on Maury mountain and the other
is on Ochoco creek twenty miles east of
Prineville. At each of these sites they cut
sights of first-class lumber, supplying the
demand for .miles around. They have large
stocks on hand now and it is their purpose
to keep them so in order that customers will
not be compelled to purchase green lumber
direct from the saws. As may be seen in the
accompanying picture their mill on Ochoco
is beautifully located in a fine body of yel
low pine and their other one is similarly
situated.
THE PILOT BUTTE DEVELOPMENT CO.
About October first, last, there was
organized in this county, and incorporated
under the laws of the state, The Pilot
Butte Development Company.
The principal objects of this corporation
are to obtain water from the Deschutes
river for the purpose of reclaiming a vast
amount of what is commonly known as
"Deseit" land; to lay out the town of Pilot
Butte, thirty miles southwest from Prine
ville on the Deschutes river; to build dams
and in other ways to develop the vast
water power of the Deschutes river, that
at the present time runs its entire course
without turning a single wheel.
At the head of this enterprise is Mr.
A. M. Drake, formerly of St Paul, wheie
he has been interested for years with his
father in railroad and land business. Ill
health compelled Mr. Drake to leave St.
Paul and the past three years, accompanied
by his wife, has been spent seeing the world
and striving to regain the lost health.
Hearing of Central Oregon, its pure wa
ter, vast pine forests, clear bracing air,
they spent several months in carefully
looking over the advantages of Crook
county. How well pleased they are one
can take for granted, when u is known that
they have built themselves a snug log house
for their winter quarters at Pilot Butte,
where they will make their future home,
and just as soon as the proper lumber can
be produced on the spot will build them a
modern residence.
It is clearly shown by the work already
accomplished that Mr. Drake has had ex
perience as an organizer. While he has
able assistants, every detail in regard to
carrying out of plans comes under his per
sonal supervision.
The work, as planned by the company,
has been thoroughly and carefully consid
ered. Other projects of a similar nature
have been investigated, and it is prepared
to profit by their failures as well as their
successes.
An up-to-date , saw mill, with modern ap
pliances for the manufacture of commer
cial lumber of all kinds that are in demand
in that section, is now under construction,
an electric light plant, general store, hotel,
and school, will be erected within a short
time.
At present there are no lots in Pilot
Butte on the market, as the town is not
yet surveyed or platted. Work, however,
in this is being pushed forward along
this line, and no doubt will soon be ready
to be placed at the disposition of those
wishing to settle there.
Work has been going on for some time
by a comparatively largo force of men in
building log houses, barns and ample ac
commodation for a large force of work
men. Two parties of civil engineers have
been in the field most of the time since
August, and more help will soon be em
ployed along this line.
The engineers are now just now com
pleting plans for a medium sized flume
and canal work on which will be started
at once, which will furnish water for
Pilot Butte, and also be of sufficient size
to reclaim a few thousand acres of land
lying in that immediate vicinity to be com
pleted by June 1st, 1901.
Some of the future plans contemplated
by the company can be seen by a glance at
the accompanying map. While no locating
has been done on these lines of canals
shown, it is known by the actual surveys
of the company that such lines are practical.
To carry out the plans, however, as are
suggested, will take more than a million
dollars, many years of hard work, and
give employment to hundreds of men.
When thetse plans have been carried out,
they will reclaim lands that are now worth-

An experimental farm is to be establish

are to be set out, and experiments along
the line of raising all kinds of fruits, grains

It is proposed to do everything possible

it is surely known that land and water are
to be united.

less, and make homes for thousands of peo
ple. It is the desire of the parties interested
in this company to secure the very best
class of settlers, people who have higher
aims than merely to get the most and best
of everything for themselves.
A school equal to any in the state will
come in due season, and no doubt a
public library will follow, in fact, Pilot
Butte is certainly to be a twentieth cen
tury town.
