Albany Democrat. A school teacher says that pupils who have access to newspapers at home when compared with those who have not are better readers, better spellers, better grammarians, excellent in pronunciation and read more understanding!', and obtain a good knowledge of geography in almost half tho time it requires others. There are nearly 1000 people at AVenatuhe, on the Upper Columbia, and it is claimed that no census enumerator has visited the place. This is another evidence of the "efficient" manner in which the census was taken. We do not won der at the numerous kicks being made all over the country. Union Scout. Rumor has it that a great many dcauYfish have floated ashore in the neighborhood of Santa Barbara lately. Juet what killed them is hard to say, but there are people who are mean enough to connect this mortality among the finny tribe with the fact that many ed itors took their annual baths there recently. Pomona Timet. The 1 l-months-old baby of Dr. W. M. Smith, of Turner, formerly of Salem, while being held by a fdy, gave a sudden jump C. M. Ilinkle was arrested in Lit tle Rock, Ark., on the charge of passing counterfeit' money. He was taken before the United States commission and although identified as the man who had been passing counterfeit money none was found on him until he was ordered to take oli' his wooden leg. In a cav ity of the limb was found a large quantity of spurious money, among the bills being a one dollar green back raised to $50. His bail was fixed at $1000, but strange to say he couldn't even give leg bail. R. D. Sepulvcda made an inter esting discovery yesterday on his ranch a mile and a quarter from San Pedro. He had been digging a reservoir some 2000 feet from the sea shore and 200 feet above the sea level, and when he reached a depth of fourteen feet below the sur face he came across some hard sub stances, which, upon investigation, proved to be the bones of a whale. Becoming interested in the matter, Mr. Sepulveda dug around the bones, and finally uncovered fifty feet of the skeleton of a whale in perfect condition. How much larger the skeleton is Mr. Sepulveda did not know, but the fact that the skeleton is there, nearly 200 feet above sea level and 2000 feet from the shore, makes it a curiosity. At One time during the Franco Prussian war the Germans were quartered at Meaux, distant about twenty-five miles from Paris, and it .was here that Bifmarck wras then stationed. Upon entering his sleep ing apartment late one night, he was amazed to find a tiny baby boy curled up on a pillow on the bed. The little fellow was only a few weeks old ; pinned to his gar ments was a note saying: ''My husband died at Sedan. I have nothing to eat. Despair forces me to separate myself from my child. He lias been baptized ia tho name of Vincent." Bismarck scratched his head ruefully and gazed at his doubt ful prize in deep perplexity. What should he do with it? We can fancy that he was sorely troubled. Finally, however, he determined to care for the child ; accordingly lie sent it by special messenger to Germany and ordered it to be well ! cared for at Berlin. "You did well," said old Kaiser Wilhcl.fi. "In time of war every thing is well worth taking even a little child."
