".'.'."I-t?: - ! - . ?-4v . -i" -v. - FkridaN HaH-Eatprs. One of the many tf?rrorsthat the Northern huntsman has to deal with in Southern Florida is the fe rocious wild hog. No one who has toot encountered this animal can Vnalize its thorough "'cossedness They are among the fiercest ani niil that inhabit tl wilds of any I land, although little is known of 'them right here in our own coun try. The wild hog of Florida will attack anything. He seems to fear nothing, and is by great odds a bolder fighter than the hear There is nothing foxy about "him. lfe does not possess any of the traits of the cayote or the wolf, but will march fearlessly into a fight alone, unaided and with the odds against him. When assailed he becomes a fiend incarnate, and will attack anything from a cougar to an alli gator. He has none of the fear which the latter posses, and while he keaps away from the . cavernous jaws of the alligator as much as possible, yet he does nofevfear to as sail him, and if on dry land, will swoop down on the alligator, with out the slightest provocation, and tiie chances are that in less than an hour's time there ' will not be a hred of the alligator left to tell of the terrible conflict, except the head and skull. The huntsman would rather run into a school of sleeping man-eating alligators, or a den of rattle snakes, than take his chances with the hog. He is by far ' the most dangerous foe that the hunter can encounter in the wilderness. If he stumbles upon a pack of them unknowingly he is, nine times out ten, a dead hunter. Even should be succeed in killing any of them, he does not escape, for their dis mal, death-portending howls soon bring reinforcements by the dozen. They 'attack the hunter at all points. While some are snarling and snapping at his legs, others are springing upon him from all sides, some have him by the throat and others are upon his arms. To shake them off is utter impos sibility. It cannot be done. Soon the hunter becomes weak and sinks to the ground from utter exhaus tion. When this stage arrives the balance is comparatively easy work for the hog, and the sportsman soon shares the same fate as the luck less alligator. Their teeth are small and sharp as a razor, and they have been known to gnaw at a tree for hours in their mad efforts to appease their hunger. Should a hunter be fortunate enough on running across them to have a good-sized tree within easy distance, he may save his life by taking to it, but "lie is even then in a bad way. The hogs are bound to scent him out, and soon as they do they are sure to range them selves about the base of the tree and remain there for hours until hunger compels them to start in search of pabulum. Even the old timers will not leave until they have thoroughly shown their dis gust by champing their foaming jaws at the fugitive ; and their lit tle eyes, full of malice, seem to en a) sparks of ferocious fire. (Jets no Credit. (Arkttituiw Traveler.) The mayor of Louisville, upon meeting an old negro, drew him aside and in a voice by .no means gentle, thus addressed him : "Randson, I am going to have you arrested." "How come dat?" "Why,.for having obtained mon ey under false pretenses." "I ain't done nothing like dat, sab I 'clar to goodness I ain't." "Didn't you coma to nie yester day and g;t a dollar?" "Yes, sah." Madame O'Rourke (of the Conti nental Employment Agency) Sure then, madam, if she drops the baby it won't have so far to fall. "Do you ever drink liquor, young man?" he asked. "No, sir; never," replied the young man with a shud der. "The nature of my business wont allow it." "I am glad to know that. What is your business." "I am a bartender." Life. President Harrison, after listen- ling patiently to an office applicant tor nearly an hour, said to him: "I grasp the situation." "That," said the office-seeker, "is just the trouble. What I want of you is to let go the situation so that I can grasp it." The verdict of those who have made a thorough investigation is that the recent terrible Johnstown disaster, as well as other destruc tive floods are due to the denuding of the mountain ranges of their forest clothing. . Such vandalism cannot be carried on without retri bution following in some form. Collections are so much in the fashion now that one will have to be taken up for the millionaire John Mackay. In San Francisco his personal property was assessed at $8200, and he made application to have the amount reduced to 15000. If they keep up this sort of thing in California bow is Mrs. Mackay going to be able to entertain princes and dukes abroad? Oregonian. In Montana a man has been ar rested and will be tried for care lessly leaving a camp fire so that it spread, did great damage and al most destroyed the town of Elk horn. We have a great many de structive fires throughout the coun try, all resulting from a similar cause, but there would not be half so many if a few campers, etc., were prosecuted for their careless ness. Among other things which visit ors to the Paris expositon are find ing out is the fact that the Eiffel tower, which is very high, is not the highest thing to be found in the gay metropolis of Frace. The price of hotel accommodations and the time that some of the vis itors are having are among the ex alted things of " which mention is made. It is announced that England and the United States have come to an understanding, in accordance with which no seizures of British vessels will be made in Behring sea this season.
