Tii elrly borhood fie was left aa or- phaivftud thrown upon his own re sounds, without the helpful counsel and support of generous kindred, but he by bis good deportment and personal industry found no lack of friends, and of the necessaries and comforts of life. In early manhood Mr. Gesner removed to Illinois, where he was married to her who now mourns a loving husband gone. In the spring of 1845 he, with hia family and little stock of earthly goods, started across the plains with ox teams for Oregon, arriving here in the fall of that year, having suc cessfully braved the dangers and hardships incident to such a jour ney. For nearly forty-three years Mr. Gesner was a citizen of this (Marion) county, known by all the early settlers and by a large circle of friends all these years as gener ous, affable, and thrifty. He took an active interest in all enterprises tending to promote the best inter ests of the community. For seve ral years he was secretary of the Marion county ' agricultural society, which was finally merged into ti:e state agri cultural society, whose grounds are located near this city. A wife and eight children, three sons and five daughters, are left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. His body was borne to the Odd Fellows' cemetery, J. J. Murpby, W. J; Henren, J.
