A Peculiar Case.
The trial of L. A. Steffin, indict
ed for horse stewling, which came
up for hearing last Monday, was
one of the most peculiar cases we
have ever beard of, and has caused
no small amount of comment.
Tho prosecution was conducted
by Judge Bennett and J. F. Moore,
and Geo. W. Barnes was counsel
for the defendant. Mr. Barnes
conducted the examination of the
jurors, and when the jury was em
paneled .Steffin asked permission
of tho court to conduct his own de
fense, which was granted, and he
discharged his attorney. In the
trial of Currin Steflin.had been iden
tified as the man Bachelor who
made a bill of sale to Currin in
Lane county on May 25th, 1885, for
a horse belonging to J. 0. Taylor,
and the same evidence was intro
duced in the trial of Steffin. The
only defense possible for Steffin
was to prove by the bill of sale that
he was not the vendor, or to prove
his whereabouts at the time the
bill of iale was givenl" Both these
he failed to do, and refused to ask
for'a eontinuance of the case until
ChelM"'' sale couid be brought
from fcugone. Steffin's actions dur
ing the trial seemed to indicate in
nocence, but the proof against him
was overwhelming, and it is gener
ally coneeeded that he got his just
dues, though some claim they can
show that he was in this county at
tho time ho was proven to have
been in Lane county with Currin.
companied him as guards.
What True Merit Will Do.
The unprecedented sale of Bos
chee'g German Syrup within a
few years has astonished the
world. It is without doubt the
safest and best remedy ever dis
covered for the speedy and eiTectual
cure of Coughs, Colds and the se
verest Lung troubles. It acts on
an entirely different principle from
the usual prescriptions given by
physicians, as it does not dry up a
cough and leave the disease "in the
system, bat on the contrary re
move the cauwot the trouble, heals
the parts affected and leaves them
in a purely healthy condition. A
bottle kept in ;,hovr house. ' for use
when the disease makes it? appear
ance will save doctor's bills and a
long spell of serious illness. A
trial will convince you 'of these
facts. It is positively sold bv all
druggists and dealers in the land.

Rather Mixed.
The case of the Stato vs M. N.
Gird, mention of which was made
last week, in which Gird was held
by tho justice in bonds of $300 to
appear before the next grand jury,
seems to be rather a mixed up af
fair. 'We are informed by Mr. G's.
attorney that tho matter was inves
tigated by the last grand jury and no
indictment was returned, and after
ward an examination was held be
fore the justice of the peace, result
ing as mentioned above. Our
knowledge of legal proceedings is
too limited to justify or hazard an
opinion as to tho regularity of this
proceeding,-Jbut it does look rather
queer. At all events Mr. Gird will
have au opportunity of.elearing the
matter up before the next grand
jury. . ,
Sfl'enceJ to Seven Years.
On Monday Judge Bird sentenced
W. G. Todd to seven years' imprison
ment for tho killing of J. N. Brack
ett. While in this trouble Mr.
Todd has tho sympathy of almost
tho entire community, prior to this
difficulty he having born? the rep
utation of being a peaceable citizen
and was well respected, his fate
will stand as a terrible warning to
others who practice carrying deadly
weapons and are too ready to use
them. We regret Mr. Todd having
got into the trouble and being sub
jected to so sever punishment, but
it will undoubtedly have asalutory
effect upon the morals of the com
munity, and will to somo extent
stop the indiscriminate use of fire
arms in tho settlement of trival
difficulties.
