STERN TEACHER
This marks the first time that a
Negro has been admitted to the
attorney general’s office in Cali­
fornia. Miss Murray, a graduate
of Howard University Law school
and winner of a Rosenwald fel­
lowship, 1944-45, recently receiv­
ed the master of laws degree
from Bealth Hall of Law, Uni­
versity of California. She was
admitted to the California bar in
December.
Oliver E. Smith filed his can­
didacy for State Representative
from Multnomah County (5th
District). Mr. Smith, a former
candidate in 1944, polled 14,885
votes in the Primaries of that
year, and placed 14th on the
Democratic choice for the post.
He is on the executive boards
of the N.A.A.C.P. and the Urban
League and the secretary of the
Progressive Democratic Club,
aside being a member of the Ex­
ecutive Committee of Multnomah
County Democratic Central Com­
mittee. Formerly of Longview,
Washington, Mr. Smith is mar­
ried and lives in South Portland
at 3411 S. W. First Ave. Mrs.
Smith is the former Miss Alise
Evans. Recently he opened his
Notary Public office on Williams
Avenue at McMillan where he
has rendered much advice and
consultation to the public.
Negro victims of infantile pa­
ralysis at Tuskegee Institute have
received more than $850,000 dur­
ing the past five years announced
Basil O’Connor, president of the
National Foundation for Infan­
tile Paralysis.

pital for treatment of Negro pol­
iomyelitis' patients and training
of Negro physicians and nurses
in the care of polio patients.
