It flourishes in th e m ost respectable qu arters. Then another type of pest, and the most despicable— are women who may be found in public places drunk, and uttering the most vile profanity constantly. They have no self-respect nor do they respect any one. They have chips on their shoulders—just begging someone to knock them off. It behooves all of us to do our best to help remedy these conditions. Through various agencies, such as The League, recently formed and headed by Mr. Kelly Foster, The Colored Citizens Taxpayers League, we can fight one type of pest. From the pulpit and platform the ministers and speakers can continue to call these condtiions to the attention of their listeners and plead with them to make themselves a committee of one and try to make conditions better; to teach the youths coming up not to have chips on their shoulders that will cause them to have hatred and malice against anyone. We hope the day is not too far distant when all men and women of all races will remove these chips and that the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man will in ♦ "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS-ANDPRO Som etim es it is soft and insidious and w hispering, som etim es it is loud-voiced. C an w e ever teach them to say, as th ey look on th e vagers of Europe, w hat a good Scottish d i vine said w hen he saw a crim inal led to the scaffold, “T here b u t for the grace of God, go I” ? W e should seek to m ake this an ob ject-lesson in a g reat cam paign. T here are strong forces on o u r side too. The anti-discrim ination law of New Y ork State, w hich G overnor D ew ey strongly su p ported and recently signed is a splendid achievem ent. B ut w e m ust attack on th e educational front. In th e la st reso rt w e m ust tru st to social education, and we m ust m uster our forces to reform o u r education, ev ery w h ere to th is end, in th e school and in th e hom e and in th e church and in th e exclusive club. We should and w e can m ain tain a g reat con tin u ous educational assault upon th e forces of darkness. T here is u rg en t need fo r it. We n e v e r tried it. Now is th e tim e.
