The per suasive fervor of Mendelssohn’s “ Lord God of Abraham” was as stirring as was the prayer of Boris from the Moussorgsky opera, “ Boris Godounoff.” There were many other songs and types in a program which grew far beyond the printed list as the singer revised and augmented sections virtually at will. Paul Robeson, now more bass than baritone, was again on the concert platform, with Law rence Brown again as his ac companist and occasional vocal associate. William Shatzkamer, pianist, was assisting artist. And then there was “ Cynthia.” Mr. Robeson’s excursion onto the stage has done his singing no harm. On the contrary, we would say that it had immensely helped the one phase of this singer’s art in which he was least able to realize his poten tialities: the interpretive phase. Mr. Robeson has always had what can justly be called one of the richest, most sensuously vi tal voices of any male singer. To this listener at least it seems that Mr. Robeson has re turned to the concert stage with his interpretive gifts refined, enlarged and admirably expres sible. His illuminative handline Plans to sponsor a drive for membership in the Urban Lea gue of Portland will be presented to the next meeting of the PAC by its committee on race rela tions. The Urban League is a national association which works for the integration of the Negro into community life. The League is supported by the community chest and voluntary contributions. Membership fees (one dollar) cover the cost of mailing monthly newsletters and other League information. The Community Chest apportions its funds on the basis of the peopic in the community who are inter ested in the organization. By con sulting membership rolls, the a- mount to be given to a service committee such as the League is determined. The race relations committee, consisting of John McKenzie, chairman, J o a n Rosenbaum, Merle Meacham, Norm Lezin, and Judy Booth, plans an integrated program to inform the Reed com munity of the worth of the Lea gue and the work it is doing in the Portland area. Warrick "The only force that will suc ceed in pushing back the terror of Fascism is the working class”, said Myra Tanner Weis of the Socialist Workers Party at a meeting last week at Anna Mann. Speaking on the topic of “Anti- Negro Terror in the Post-war Crisis” she first pointed out the causes of the terrifying acts now being perpetrated all over the United States. The years around 1920 were called the Golden Era because it was thought the capi talist class had found a way to lead America on the road to last ing prosperity. This belief, how ever, was shattered in the thirties when the American Capitalistic system entered a depression from which it has never fully recov ered. Due to these conditions, race discrimination has increased and has assumed a more brutal form. Miss Weis believes that the eco nomic crisis has caused the growth of fascism in America. Her specific example of what is occuring at the present time was the Fontana case. This was a case which occurred in Califor nia against the Short family. This family was threatened by Vigilantes because they were liv ing in a white district. A short time later their home mysterious ly burned down and the mother and two children were killed. The father died soon afterward from injuries of the fire. In the investigation that fol lowed, there was such a display of injustice that the Socialist La bor Party launched a campaign to tell the story of the Short fam ily to workers and students throughout the West. Miss Weis said that the im portant problem lying before us now is to do something about this wave of terror spreading throughout the country. Unless some action is taicen about the Fontana Case there is a danger of further growth of Vigilante groups. The final aim of the struggle against fascism, according to this speaker, is that a socialistic so ciety takes the place of the cap italistic society. “No one has an inherent prejudice. This has been bred by the system. Unless we find a socialistic solution we will have fascism in the United States.” ' LOMO NOVELTY COMPANY D ep t. 11 W . 42nd S t. Socialist Damns Fascist Trends M.
