S he w as a m em ber of th e T h ree Shades Trio, w hose recording of “T w i light T ill D aw n,” w as q u ite popu lar y ears ago. A fter leaving the Trio she tou red from M exico to C anada an d from C alifornia to N ew Y ork w ith th e first W estern All Colored U. S. O. show. From this she played all th e fashionable clubs in H ollywood. A fter w hich she joined E rskin H aw k in ’s fam ous band and rem ain ed as fea tu red vocalist for tw o years, d u r ing w hich tim e she trav eled from coast to coast fo u r tim es. Upon leaving th e H aw kins aggregation she re tu rn e d to Hollywood and m ade th e now fam ous recording of "Effie Blues". Miss Sm ith is a S ta r Gem R ecording a rtist and to d ate has such releases as “Ef- fie’s B lues”, “I’m in the G roove T onight,” “Oh, W hat I D ream ed A bout You,” “Wee B aby B rother B lues,” and ju st recently released a sure hit, !“I B een D own in T exas,” backed by Root-Voot. Jesse O w ens and his g reat K a n sas C ity S tars ate hum ble pie at th e hands of th e local q u in te t at Jefferson high last Sunday, 60-46. T he trav elin g pro lads ju s t couldn’t cope w ith the stellar floor p lay of P a t P a tte rso n and th e uncanny accuracy of Red O ’Connel. P atterso n and O’Con- nel tied for high scoring honors w ith 16 points apiece w ith P e r kins in second place w ith 15 points.
