F riday. Ja n u a ry 11. 1946 PO RTLAN D IN QU IRER BALLADS THAT'S OUR BUSINESS Bill (Ink Spots) Kenny Tells Ted Yates How Quartet Hits K enny High Note With Popular Ballads •'P 'tX L K K , am 1 glad to see yo u !” * It was Bill K enny’s voice. The leader and tenor of A m erica's No 1 qu artet had ju st entered his dressing room at the Cafe Zanzibar a fte r doing the first show on open ing night. "W ell." he continued. ”i know w hat you want to know.” "You do. huh?” I quipped. "Sure, you reporters alw ays ask about how we did on the road and what num bers the fans went for m ost of all." Kenny said, showing th at popular broad grin of his that has made him a favorite with every one. "But not to spoil your Inter view. Ted." he added, "actually, what Is ft this tim e th a t you’d like to know?” "I’m anxious to learn w hat type of songs the crow ds are going for in various sections of the country. Do they like blues, sw ing or — ?” "B allads.’’ Kenny broke In and at the sam e tim e waved a “beg p a r don" as he did. "Sw eet stuff, huh?” "Precisely, Ted." Bill pointed out. "and, do you know sum pln’ — th a t ballads is our business?" Co-ordination "In our trip throughout the coun try ; north, south, east and west, I took particu lar notice of the re action between the various types of songs th at the fans w ent for in a big way.” The tenor singer changed in to a pair of bright pajam as and donned a bright cardinal silk robe as he went on to explain the trend of m usic cross-country. I m ade it known to him th a t al though there was a re-birth of the blues taking place th at sw ing too cam e in for its sh a re of plaudits. "I agree with you. old m an,” Bill sm iled and with th a t I took his calling me ‘old m an’ as m ere jest (sensitive, these re p o rte rs); and accepting a mild H avana cigar lis tened intentively, "a rhythm-bound group is alright it is true. All choral groups blend with the sw eet and hot. T h at's wh;. you hear the critics rave that the so-and-so boys are ’solid on the sw eet side’ when w rit ing th eir reviews. But the Ink Spots, we prefer to be sw eet on the solid side— and ballads does it.” • T he telephone rang som ewhere outside the dressing room and I could hear it above the laughter of th e crowd of carefree diversion seekers who had jam -packed the Zanzibar. A knock cam e at the door and alm ost instan tly Coleman. K enny’s valet, sprung the door open. “ B ill K e n n y w a n t e d on t h e 'phone,’’.a voice uttered. “ Excuse me, Ted." and Kenny left hurriedly. It w asn’t long before I joined the Broadway mob. “Ballads," I m used to myself, "so th a t's how A m erica’s favorite q uar te t hits high with popular m elodies.” \ rentur.t som e wise guy pul him self on record by cracking th al "one e arth , th ere's little w orth a sigh -and nothing worth a te a r!” -N < news to hard-boiled eggs, but lovers won’t believe a word of it!
