he disclosed.

can should assum e th e responsi­
bility of com bating recial and
religious, prejudice in defense of
dem ocracy, R oper believes his
w ork is sam pling public opinion

we m ight come closer to this
goal.”
D em ocracy H andicapped
Ignorance, he revealed, is the
greatest handicap to dem ocracy.

those w ho falsely believe Jew s
have a stronghold on U. S. fi­
nances th a t th ere is m ost o u t­
spoken hostility to individual
Jew s as neighbors, even as it is
am ong the deluded w ho “th in k
Negro m en a re all eager to m arry
w hite w om en,” th a t th ere is
strongest unw illingness to “see
the N egro a tta in econom ic eq u a l­
ity .”
Ignorance, too, he continued,
caused th e uninform ed to suspect
C atholics ow e “political and re ­
ligious obseisance to th e pope,”
creating th e so-called "C atholic
m enace.”
W hat To Do
In explaining counter m easures
to push and advance dem ocracy,
R oper said:
“All of us w ho are so m inded
can fight fo r b e tte r education for
m ore people; all of us can fight
for m ore and b e tte r new spapers,
radios and m agazines; all of us
can fig h t against p o v erty an d
econom ic inequality.
B u t you
and I have a special obligation.
We can striv e calm ly and w ith
obvious fairness to supply m ore
inform ation about th e size and
n a tu re of all m inorities. W here
th ere a re m isconceptions about
Catholics, Jew s, N egroes and
southern B aptists, w e can offer
facts.

ority is dangerous because of its
religion o r race. T he only m in ­
