Remember that the man returning from overseas looks for simple pleasures, good food, clean sheets, a job, a fam ily, a decent place to live, a suit of his own choice. His demands are modest. He wants a decent job, fair chance for advancement and security and assurance that there will be no more further wars. That’s all. He knows as well as anyone that his problems cannot be sep arated from the problems of the country. He knows that jobs cannot be separated from jobs for everyone. He wants no special brand of pity, no condesending attitudes on the part of family and friends. He wants also no impatience at the fact that he has to momentarily catch up with things and find out what is going on. The first m arv el I saw was a giant k itch en in w hich enough coffee and d oughnuts are m ade by the DPs—displaced persons to serve th e daily “incom e" of the m ore th an 6500 G Is w ho visit the th ree clubs located in this city. Seventeen languages are spoken by th e D Ps b u t they all seem to know how to tra n sla te the recipes for the coffee and dough nuts into th e right language.
