Friday, N ovem ber 23. 1946 PORTLAND INQUIRER PW « SPORTS ïinrtlanîi inquirir By Alvin Moses QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS J NEW YORK, (ANP)—Has Jackie Wilson, local boxer, top ranking in your private book? How would you rate him alongside the Chalky Wright of 1940— Victor Roberts, Pittsburgh. A. Wilson was never a great warrior in my book. The Wright of 1940 could knock him out and name the round. Q. Is Herbie Thompson a greater sprinter than was Howard P. Drew? I seem to think he is but never saw Drew run?—Howard Clark, East Orange, N. J. A. I saw them both at their best and I would take Drew for my choice. Q. Did you notice the rotten sportsmanship of the Jersey (white team) Reds on Sunday night, Nov. 6 against the Renaissance Five? Don’t you think that Bob Douglas should pay stricter attention to booking teams capable-of extending his club?—Arthur Spencer, Brooklyn. A. I did observe the display of bad temper on the part of the Reds same being worse I’ve noted in many season. I intend talking to Douglas on the booking angle, thanks for bringing out that important factor, Artie. Q. There is some talk about the Brooklyn Dodgers (football team) signing a colored player. Whom would you select for first choice?—Lester Greene, Washington, D. C A. Kenny Washington. (I would have said Jackie Rob inson only I’m thinking of his baseball future and possible injuries.) Q. I see and talk with Dick (Cannonball) Redding, former Lincoln Giants pitcher of 30 years ago, daily. Is it true that he struck out 24 batters in one game of nine innings; struck out George Herman (“Babe”) Ruth 10 or II times, always holding the edge on the Babe; and was he as fast as Bob Feller or “Saitch” Paige?—Chauncey Scott, Detroit. A. You know your records fella—everything you said was 100% correct. Having seen Feller, Paige and Redding at their best, I would unhesitatingly cast my vote (speediest pitch) for Dick Redding. Q. A quarter mile run for each man (four to a team) would find relay “A ” represented by: Jimmy Herbert, Johnny Borican, Binga Dismond, and John B. Taylor. The opposition would line up like this: Archie Williams, Johnnie Woodruff, Cecil Cooke and Phil Edwards. Who do you think would win?—T.H.G., Lima, Ohio. A. Team “A”. Q. In light of the current professionalism charges against Gundar Haag and Arne Anderson, do you recall any such charges lodged against an outstanding Negro amateur ath lete at any time?—Robert Woods, Philadelphia. A. Yes. Howard Drew was so accused around 1914 or 1915 while a student at University of Southern California or Drake college. (I've forgotten which school he was at tending at time.) In his case he was cleared of the charges.
