CO RPS OF EN G IN EERS Of th e 259,173 Negro troops in the E uropean T h eater of O per ations as of M ay 15, a little m ore th a n one in every five w as an engineer soldier, according to in form ation released by th e Office of the C hief E ngineer of th e ETO. On M ay 31 th e re w ere 54,600 N egro engineer enlisted men, 320 officers and 54 w a rra n t officers of a to tal of 337,000 in th e th e a te r ’s E ngineer Com m and. This total includes personnel of g en eral service regim ents, engineer dum p tru c k com panies, engineer fire fighting units, aviation engin eer battalions and sep arate b a t talions. T here w ere 165 engineer units of all types. A survey of N egro engineer u nits show ed th a t Negro en g in eers particip ated in all of the m ain operations by U. S. TRANSPORTATION CO RPS N egro troops m ade an im p res sive co n trib u tio n to th e operations of th e T ran sp o rtatio n C orps from D-Day to V-E Day, a survey com piled from inform ation ob tain ed from ETO T ran sp o rtatio n C orps h ead q u arters showed. T he m ission of th e A rm y ’s T ran sp o rtatio n Corps is to tra n s p ort m en and supplies. S tatistics released by th e office of M ajor G en eral F ran k S. Rose, chief of T ran sp o rtatio n in th e E uropean T h eater, indicate th e m agnitude of its achievem ents as w el las th e e x te n t of Negro p articip atio n in th e operations of the Corps. N egro Troops of th e T ran sp o r tatio n C orps w ere in th e initial w aves on D-Day, cam e ashore w ith th e engineer b rig ad es and helped start w hat ev en tu ally b e cam e th e greatest supply o p er ation in m ilitary history. The N orm andy supply b attle was won by units like the 490th P ort B attalion, w hich cam e in w ith th e second tide on D-Day and unload crucial supplies of a m m unition, food and eq u ip m en t to be used by the assaut troops. T he 370th Q u a rte rm a ste r Truck C om pany, a tra n sp o rta tio n unit, was scheduled to land 55 vehicles and 115 m en on th e beach on D plus 1. Instead, it got 24 men and 12 trucks ashore as early as early as the m orning of D-Day.
