Education:
Passion: Bad martial arts movies - basically
all of them. The worse the production
quality, the more times I’ve seen it.

Why I work at the Keizertimes:
I enjoy journalism and wanted to get back to it.
Keizer is a strong community and a great place
to improve my skills.
ou
Why local community journalism is important:
It’s vital - people need to have a place they can
turn to that is going to give them information
relevant to their own community. It creates a
healthy culture when everyone is informed and
involved.

PAGE A4, KEIZERTIMES, APRIL 22, 2022
Four generations mark twins' 96th
By LYNDON ZAITZ
Of the Keizertimes
They were born in 1926, 15 minutes apart in
a house in Scholls, Oregon, amidst an orchard
of walnut trees.
On Saturday, April 16, surrounded by doz-
ens of family members, sisters Letha and Lela
celebrated their 96th birthday at The View
Restaurant at McNary Golf Club.
The sisters are one of two sets of twins born
into the family.
The family moved to Dundee when the
girls were in second grade. After relocating
to Newberg, the sisters went to different high
schools due to family dynamics. Letha was a
cheerleader at her school while Lela played
volleyball at her high school. Lela wanted to
play basketball as well There was no girls bas-
ketball team at the time and she was denied
acceptance on the boys team.
Letha and Lela graduated high school in
1945, then went their separate ways. Letha mar-
ried in 1946. She and her husband Bill eventu-
ally made their way to Riverside, Calif., where
both made careers in the banking field. They
had two children. Today, Letha has six grand-
children and six great-grandchildren.
Lela married Ward Rolland in 1947.They
settled in Salem where Lela cleaned houses
for some of the area’s most prominent fam-
ilies. Lela and Ward had three children,
including Marlene Rolland, now Marlene
Wellin. There are six grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
On Saturday, the banquet room at The
View was filled with four generations, all
descendants of Mable and Monroe Hutchens.
Today, Letha lives at a retirement com-
munity in south Salem while Lela resides at a
senior facility in Keizer.
