crash on Verda Lane
of the Week
presented by
On November 10, at approximately 8:45 a.m., the Keizer Police Department
responded to a two vehicle crash in the 5300 block of Verda Ln NE. Offi cers arrived
and conducted an investigation which led to the arrest of 38-year old, Monica Batsell
of Keizer.
It was determined that Batsell was driving north on Verda Ln NE when she struck
a parked City of Keizer Public Works service truck. The collision pushed the unoccu-
pied service truck the distance of its length and up onto and over a curb. Batsell had
her two children in the vehicle at the time of the crash and all three were uninjured.
Batsell was arrested and charged with:
• One count of driving under the infl uence of intoxicants = $5,000
• Two counts of reckless endangering = $10,000
• One count of reckless endangering of a highway worker = $5,000
Investigators believe alcohol was a contributing factor to this crash.
We were blessed with the birth of our
son, Jon on March 4, 1981 and were at his
side when he parted on Nov. 3, 2021 from
organ failure.
Jon lived most of his life in Oregon
where he loved to spend time at the coast
and the mountains. His love for nature and
the serenity that ensued was priceless. Jon
graduated with his Bachelors Degree in
History from Western Oregon University
and his Masters Degree in Business
Administration from Warner Pacifi c
University. Jon was very intelligent and
was held in high esteem by his colleagues
at Studio EL where he met many he
considered his friends. Jon’s humble nature
to help educate others was felt by many.
Jon had a great love for family, especially
his cousin, Holly and his niece, Melody. He
had a kind and generous heart and a quiet
demeanor when thinking of others. He was
our champion, a protector and a good soul.
Jon left behind his father Larry, mother
Jan, brother Ryan, sister-in-law Cheryl,
niece Melody, and many aunts, uncles and
cousins.
Faith has given us the comfort to know
he is with the Lord and at peace. Knowing
we will be together again is what sustains
us throughout these painful days now and
in the future. The nurses and staff at the
Salem Hospital in the ICU fi fth fl oor unit
are true angels. Their tremendous eff orts
to save Jon shows their compassion and
determination to give comfort to those in
their care. The staff at OHSU ICU also did
everything possible to save Jon and for
that we are grateful.
A service of remembrance will be held
Nov. 20, 2021 at Court Street Christian
Church in Salem at 1 p.m.
Masks must be worn as Jon would have
wanted each of you to care and protect each
other. He was a fi rm proponent of vaccines,
masks and any other way to protect others
from a preventable disease.
Please consider donating in Jon’s name,
to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,
The Red Cross or a charity of your choice.
Every day the importance of donating
blood is even greater. Please also consider
donating blood, knowing someone close to
you may need blood at any given time.
Don’t hesitate to tell others how special
they are and that you love them.
