John Rizzo, a Keizer resident, has
taken his idea of reserving parking
spaces for military veterans nation-
wide and has launched a GoFundMe
campaign to raise $5,000 for Veterans
Parking.
Veteran’s Parking is a 501(c)-3 non-
profi t organization that aims to provide
a parking space for those who have
served their country. Parking spaces are
provided by property owners, primarily
at commercial locations, on a voluntary
CCC offering pre-apprenticeship program
Chemeketa Community College
will continue the Campus-Based Pre-
Apprenticeship Program for winter term
2022 on the Salem campus. The pro-
gram allows participants to gain knowl-
edge, skills, and experience valued by
construction employers and Registered
Apprenticeship Programs.
Students enrolled in the Pre-
Apprenticeship program take two col-
lege classes to fulfi ll requirements: Trade
Skills Fundamentals (APR 101) and an
additional employment-related course
or an internship. Participants must com-
plete additional safety training, includ-
ing OSHA 10 and First-Aid/CPR.
Pre-Apprentices receive up to $650
in tools, safety clothing, boots, and gas
cards as participants of the program
which is made possible from a BOLI/
ODOT grant. Chemeketa provides addi-
tional support to help pre-apprentices
pay the tuition and fees for the required
courses in the Pre-Apprenticeship
Program, including fi nancial aid, Job
Corps Scholars, and the STEP Program.
Upon completion, pre-apprentices
will receive a certifi cate that demon-
strates their completion in a Registered
Pre-Apprenticeship Program, college
credit for courses, and OSHA 10 and
First-Aid/CPR cards.
Applications for the winter 2022 pro-
gram are due December 10, 2021, and
space is limited. For more information
on requirements or questions regard-
ing the Pre-Apprenticeship Program,
email apprenticeship@chemeketa.edu.

Rizzo says the program is nation-
wide, aided by Lowe’s and Home Depot,
which are both placing Veteran’s Parking
signs at all their retail locations across
the country, at their expense.
No public funds or taxes are used to
fund the parking spaces for veterans.
