and website provide an important sense of community
with reliable reporting, compelling storytelling, and
solid leadership. At a time when America is increas-
ingly divided, our reporters are a unifying voice in
our communities by providing a non-partisan, trusted
source of local news.
Studies show that when there are fewer local
reporters, it’s harder for neighbors to know each other
and for communities to solve their own problems.
Voting goes down. Participation at public meetings
goes down. The information vacuums are fi lled with
misinformation and conspiracy. There’s more govern-
ment waste and corruption.
Local journalism transcends party lines. We create
stronger communities by reporting the facts about
what’s happening at city hall, in our schools and at
HOW YOU CAN HELP!
1. EMAIL OUR POLITICAL LEADERS
Send an email to your representatives in Congress. Let
them know how important local news is to you and your
community. Ask them to support the Local Journalism
Sustainability Act. This act will directly support our abil-
ity to hire more local journalists for your community.

local businesses. We share stories of games won, lives
lost, and of our neighbors who volunteer to make a
diff erence.
Community journalists have served this role for more
than a century in Oregon and yet, at a time when their
skills are needed more than ever, we have fewer of them
working. That’s why there is legislation proposed in
Congress to give newspapers a tax credit to off set some
of the cost of keeping reporters in our communities.
