AUGUST 13, 2021, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A23 Mavs League Recaps: Volcanoes maintain second place position BY MATT RAWLINGS Of the Keizertimes Thursday, Aug. 5: Mavericks 10 Volcanoes 1 Garrett Alvarez threw seven innings of shutout baseball and fi ve players had multi-hit games for the Mavericks as they completed the dominant 10-1 win over the Volcanoes in the series opener. Alvarez only allowed four hits and one walk while striking out seven. After an RBI-single by Mavericks fi rst baseman Matt Holiday gave his team a 1-0 advantage, the Mavericks struck for four more in the bottom of the third, three of which coming on a three-run blast by Andrew Castano. The Mavericks took a 6-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Holiday knocked in his third run of the game on an infi eld single. Three more runs in the bottom of the eighth gave the Mavericks their largest lead of the ballgame at 10-0.
