Where and how
do you volunteer?
"Before COVID, I was teaching
English/ESL classes for adult
refugees in the Salem area, through
the Salem For Refugees program. I
helped with classes once or twice a
week. I look forward to getting back
in class with our “new neighbors”
who are so eager to learn English.
I also volunteer for Confl uence
LGBT Chorus in record-keeping and
correspondence around donations to
the chorus. Each year I volunteer as
a cashier at the spring and summer
plant sales that raise funds for Bush
Park gardens and the Mission Street
parks. I’ve helped in a small way
with community eff orts such as the
Big Toy, the arboretum, and with
loading and hauling broken trees
and branches after the ice storm. On
a longterm basis, I’m entering my
fourth year serving on the Board of
Directors in Rotary E-Club of One
World. I’ve been co-chairing the
Service Projects Committee and will
now begin serving as club treasurer."
How would you get
others to volunteer in
their community?
"First, I’d ask them about their
passions. What area of interest might
make them eager to share their time,
their skills, and experience? It might
be literacy, nature and environment,
children’s health, arts and music, or
human rights. Whatever that passion
is, there are bound to be others in
the community who share it, and can
help them connect with a one-time
event or ongoing service project in
our community."
