tempt to make it better,” Rist
said.
There are currently 40
kids in the club and Rist
meets with individual sec-
tional groups (sopranos, altos,
tenors, bass) on a daily basis.
During meetings, students
will regularly discuss music
and organize collaborations
for self-directed projects.

57.5% of the vote to State
Sen. Shemia Fagan’s 42.5%.
Thatcher lost the statewide
election.
Republican
Danielle
Bethell defeated Democrat
Ashley Carson Cottingham
in the race to replace
outgoing Marion County
Commissioner Sam Brentano.
Bethell took 57.5% of the
Keizer vote.
Keizer’s closest city council
race was decided by 314 votes.
City Councilor-elect Kyle
Juran and Michele Roland-
Schwartz split Keizer’s eight
precincts evenly, each won
four, but Juran’s support in
the north Keizer precincts
carried him to victory.
While an operating levy
that would have supported
Marion County Fire District
No. 1 (MCFD) failed to pass
voter muster, the residents
of Keizer whose homes are
served by MCFD supported
the tax. More than 53%
percent of the roughly 1,348
voters gave it their blessing.
Of the four statewide
ballot measures up for
consideration, Keizer agreed
with most of the state on all
but one. The city’s residents
overwhelmingly
approved
measures to amend campaign
fi nance regulations, increase
taxes on tobacco and nicotine
products and reduce criminal
penalties for drug possession
while redirecting some state
revenues to pay for additional
addiction recovery centers.
However, 52.6% of Keizer
voters opposed a measure
that legalized psilocybin. The
psilocybin measure passed
in the statewide vote with
55.7% support.
The only local measure
on the ballot was approval
of a new city charter. Keizer
approved the change with
65.9% percent of the fi nal
vote.
Turnout in the city
averaged 77.5%. Precinct 401,
which includes areas around
Clear Lake and Forest Ridge
elementary schools, notched
the highest voter turnout
with 86.72% of ballots
returned.
Annual Candy Cane Day
becomes drive-thru event
Keizer Fire District
(KFD) will be hosting a
drive-thru Candy Cane
Day on Saturday Dec. 19
where kids have the op-
portunity to receive a can-
dy cane from Santa.
KFD asks that’s no one
exit their vehicle and to
wear a mask when it’s their
turn to see Santa.
Santa will be located
at Day Spring Fellowship
(1755 Lockhaven Dr NE)
and Keizer/Salem Senior
Center (930 Plymouth Dr
NE) from 9 a.m. until 4
p.m.
part outside of class, then go
over with me and provide
feedback,” Rist said. “It’s
been a learning process the
kids have got to experience
with each other. Kids have
been getting better and better
through the process.”
Last month, the club creat-
ed their own rendition of The
Hymn of Acxiom by Vienna
Teng. Although they couldn’t
be together in-person, the
students used Soundtrap to
sing and layer each section
of the song to make it sound
like they were singing togeth-
er — the song can be found
on YouTube.
Even though Rist was
proud of the fi nal product,
he admitted that it was a
little heartbreaking that he
couldn’t share with his stu-
dents’ joy in-person.
“It was beautiful but bit-
tersweet. I miss the kids and I
miss the classroom. It used to
feel like this every day,” Rist
said. “They were going on
and on about how cool this
was and that they were proud
of what they had created.”
Even though Rist wish-
es he could see his students
in-person, he is excited for
future projects that the club
will come up with.
“I’m grateful that we have
the opportunity to meet. It
stinks for the seniors that this
is their fi nal experience with
choir, but they are still putting
their stamp on the program,”
Rist said.

an attorney’s offi ce, was $305.
The local trends mirrored
what appeared to happen on
the national level, the top two
loan recipients received as
much money as the bottom
52% of Keizer businesses.
Other highlights from the
latest data include:
• Four businesses received
more than $500,000 in payroll
protection loans.
• Thirty-nine businesses
received between $100,000 and
$400,000 for a total of more
than $7.6 million.
• The number of businesses,
236, that received less than
$100,000 amounted to $6.64
million.
• The average loan amount
$64,580.23.
• Shari’s Restaurant, with
a location on River Road
North, was one of only six
Oregon companies to receive
the maximum loan amount of
$10 million. The chain reported
saving 500 jobs with the payroll
protection money.
Throughout Oregon, 66,100
businesses received more than
$7 billion in CARES relief.
Roughly a third of that amount
went to 1.6%, or 258, recipients.
The average loan for an Oregon
business was $106,692.11.
