Meithof, Doutt earn all-region honors
Meithof
McNary junior basketball
players Nate Meithof and
Leah Doutt were named to
the All-Region team by the
Statesman Journal.
Meithof was named the
MVC co-player of the year
for the Celtics boys team
after averaging over 23
points and 9 rebounds per
game — both of which were
the fourth best marks in the
Doutt
state. He was also named the
all-region player of the year.
Doutt, on the other hand,
averaged 13.3 points per
game and led the McNary
girls squad in three-point
makes. She also was the
Celtics assist leader, averaging
over four a game — she was
the only player on the team
with a positive assist-to-
turnover ratio.
Rios receives multiple football offers
In a span of three days,
McNary junior linebacker
Dyami Rios received three
scholarship offers to play
Division I football.
Rios announced on his
Twitter page that the Uni-
versity of Idaho, George-
town University and Dart-
mouth University have all
offered him scholarships to
continue his education and
athletic career.
Rios is entering into his
senior year with a 4.18 GPA.
On the fi eld, Rios led
McNary with 97 tackles
and was named second-team
all-league linebacker for the
second straight season.
Rios also was a fi rst-team
all-league performer at tight
end and helped the Celtics
win back-to-back Mountain
Valley Conference champi-
onships. He is currently un-
decided on where he wants
to attend.

Stuff is good
As I sit here in my recliner
watching the news, I realize
I feel like I’m in a
sci-fi movie and
we’re all actors
in this surrealistic
event. I would be
easy to slide in a
‘poor me’ syn-
drome, but I have
so many things
to be thank-
ful for, so I
try to stay
positive.
I can’t
go fi shing
because my
wife, Darlene,
has essentially
grounded me—
only because she
loves me. I can work, which
is fortunate. Many people are
not so lucky. Mowing my
customers’ lawns without
any social con-
tact is a safe en-
deavor and it’s
good exercise.
I have been
able to clean
and (halfway)
organize
the
garage. I was
able to fi nd
enough
stuff
we
didn’t use to
make a trip
to the dump.
It is painful
because guys
need
stuff.
Women don’t
understand the
importance of stuff. Guys
know that these things will
be needed sometime in the
future. No matter that it
hasn’t been needed for a de-
cade, you never know when
a project might require that
obscure item you saved. Oh
well, I took it all to the dump.
My vice has gotten a
workout as I spend time ty-
ing some fi shing fl ies I hope
to use in a month or two.
Our annual trip to our favor-
ite lake in June is still a may-
be. All boat ramps are now
closed and we can only hope
that all is behind us so we can
go. If the fl ies I’m tying can’t
be used this spring, I’ll have
fewer to tie for the next year.
My son, Jeff, who lives
in the Redmond area, had
a couple of great hours on
the middle Deschutes River
one day last week. A prolifi c
hatch of March Brown may-
fl ies had a big brown trout
feeding like crazy. He landed
30 browns up to 15 inches
before the hatch subsided.
He called me as soon as he
got back to his truck. At least
I can fi sh through him if I
can’t be there myself. I can
fi nd satisfaction in knowing
that I taught him well.
As I wait for the credits to
roll on this sci-fi movie were
making, I remember we’re
all in this together. It’s a war
against an unseen enemy and
we all share the same foxhole.
We all share the anxieties and
fear of the unknown.
As Americans always have,
we’re rising to the challenge.
We are once again work-
ing together for the whole.
If we continue to do the
things individually to stop
this pandemic we will pre-
vail. The coverage of our fi rst
responders, doctors, nurses,
store clerks and truck drivers
show us how great the people
of our country are. We must
sacrifi ce some of ourselves to
ease their sacrifi ce. We can all
be our better selves.
This will all pass in time.
The credits will roll, we’ll
climb out of our foxhole and
life as we know it will return.
I’ll get ungrounded and once
again grab my fl ared and
head to the water. Until then
I’m going to just chill and
start collecting more stuff. I
am sure I will need it again.
Someday.
