Councilors serve up
Thanksgiving dinner
Members of the Keizer city council as well
as city staff served Thanksgiving dinner at the
monthly Community Dinner at St. Edward
Catholic Church Wednesday, Nov. 27.
The monthly event provided 480 meals for
visitors. In addition, members of the St. Edward
parish provide hundreds of meals to those un-
able to leave their homes each year on Thanks-
giving Day.

Chemeketa tops in online
business mgmt. degrees
Chemeketa
Community
College was recently ranked
the No. 1 most affordable
online management associate
degree in the nation by ON-
LINEU.org.
Chemeketa’s tuition is
$2,610 for degrees in busi-
ness management, hospitality
and tourism management, and
procurement and supply chain
management.
Twenty-two
schools made ONLINEU’s
Most Affordable Online Man-
agement Associate Degree list.
Chemeketa’s online pro-
grams are tailored for work-
ing adults who can’t take time
off their work days to attend
in-person classes. Parents with
young children also prefer the
online alternative to face-to-
face classes to avoid having to
arrange for childcare or incur
additional expenses in that area.

of their monthly income
on rent, and 25 percent of
homeowners are in the same
situation when it comes to
their mortgage. Nearly every
family making less than
$35,000 annually in Keizer is
rent burdened and it includes
elderly residents facing rising
costs in manufactured home
communities throughout the
city as well as younger residents
just starting out.
Resident Mike DeBlasi
suggested that city offi cials
look at reducing parking
requirements in its development
code and increasing the desired
mix of multifamily housing
going forward.
“We might want to be a little
more aggressive in changing the
overall housing mix,” he said.
On the matter of state-
mandated rental caps, which
are different than rent controls
that would prevent rents from
rising above a given fi gure, City
Manager Chris Eppley said they
were just as likely to prevent
rent rates from decreasing as
they otherwise might.
“There will be a disincentive
to reduce rent as the supply
and demand curve would
have allowed. The market will
fi nd its way around controls,”
Eppley said.
Keizer’s hands are tied in
many ways regardless of other
external factors. The city’s low
tax rate, low development fees
and lack of green fi eld space
to develop prevent it from
offering incentives to entice
more varied development.
Brown said the best course
of action in the near future
is continuing to work with
regional partners facing the
same issues.
