porting it came to him from
an organization that strongly
opposes LGBTQ+ positions
and he wanted no appear-

pressuring the board to honor
parents’ involvement.
Personnel actions approved
by the board included the fol-

• Temporary part-time: Glen-

The board had their fi rst

Of the Keizertimes
The system of electing
directors of Salem-Keizer
Public Schools is about to be
taken up by a committee Su-
perintendent Christy Perry is
appointing.
Each of the seven directors
represents one zone in the
district, but all are elected at
large. This is not the case of all
school districts, and Perry is in
the process of putting togeth-
er a group of citizens to study
the election systems of other
districts around the state.
Perry hopes to have appli-
cations for committee posi-
tions submitted by early De-
cember, she said at Tuesday’s
School Board meeting.
Also at the meeting, the
board re-elected Levi Herre-
ra-Lopez to one of two open
positions on the budget com-
mittee and elected Jacqualine
Bechtel to the other. Her-
rera-Lopez was committee
chair in 2018-19.
The board elected one of
its new members, Satya Chan-
dragiri, to the legislative poli-
cy committee of the Oregon
School Boards Association.
In the Spotlight on Success
portion of the meeting, the
McNary boys’ soccer team
was recognized for sports-
manship and volunteerism
for its response to a storm-
caused fl ood at Westview
High School in Beaverton
in September. The team was
about to return from a game
when it found the Westview
locker room fl ooded, so they
carried in sandbags to absorb
the water.
The board accepted eight
grants, seven from the Oregon
Department of Education.
The largest, $360,113, was
the 2020-21 Oregon Farm to
School Procurement Grant. It
reimburses districts for buying
locally grown and processed
food for lunches.
