Capitol Auto Group held a
groundbreaking ceremony for
its new Capitol Subaru dealer-
ship near its other dealerships
on Cherry Avenue and the
Salem Parkway on Monday,
Nov. 4.
Alex Casebeer and Mat-
thew Casebeer joined their fa-
ther, company president Scott
Casebeer, along with Salem
Mayor Chuck Bennett, Brian
Moscatelli, Subaru’s Portland
zone director and Tim Detoni,
of Toyota Financial Services,
which is fi nancing the project,
to shovel the fi rst loads of dirt
for the new 70,000 square foot
facility that will take place of
the current Subaru dealership.
That site will be purposed into
a vehicle rehabilitation facility.
Capitol Subaru general
manager Alex Casebeer said
the new facility is needed
to meet the demand for the
brand, one of the top sellers in
the Willamette Valley.
The facility will be de-
signed by Carlson Veit archi-
tects of Salem and built by
C.D. Redding Construction.
The project represents an in-
vestment of more than $18
million. Other features of the
building will include a fenced
dog park, event pavilion, food
carts, walking trails, indoor/
outdoor fi replace and a living
green wall inside. Estimat-
ed completion date is end of
2020.

Dr. Vernon Dale Casterline,
born April 13, 1917, passed
away Oct. 16, 2019, in his Keiz-
er residence. He was 102.
Casterline was born in Vida,
Montana. His mother passed
away when he was 1-and-a-half
years old. He and his older sis-
ter Lois went to live with their
grandmother in Minnesota. He
later returned to Montana to
fi nish high school, graduating
in 1935. After graduation, Cast-
erline moved to Salem, Oregon
in 1937 via an invitation from
his aunts. While in Salem, he
attended Willamette University
and graduated in 1941. While
attending classes at Willamette
University, he worked part time
down the road at Salem Hos-
pital as their very fi rst night
orderly.
He enlisted in the Army
in 1943 serving in the Med-
ical Corp and honorably dis-
charged in 1946 and later at-
tended OHSU medical school
in Portland where he graduated
in 1948.
Casterline opened his gen-
eral practice (physician & sur-
geon) offi ce in Keizer, Ore., in
1950 as Keizer’s fi rst doctor.
He married his former surgical
nurse from St. Vincent Hospi-
tal, Jeannie Ryser and together
they raised fi ve children. Re-
tiring from his practice in 1986,
Vernon kept busy making jew-
elry at the Salem Senior Cen-
ter and as director of the Salem
Plasma Center well into his 80s.
After Jeanne’s death in 2002,
