Halloween is coming and we’ve
got your quick costume ideas
BY LAUREN MURPHY

Celebrating Halloween on a school day poses one of the hardest variations
of “what do I wear today?” Is it weird to go in costume? How much
of the costume is school appropriate? Is it worth getting up early
to get ready?
Below are some dress-code appropriate, simple,
costumes that you can wear to school without any undo
fuss.
Hipster- Grab a beanie, a grey v-neck shirt, skinny
jeans and converse and your good to go. Add fake (or
real) glasses and temporary tattoos to complete the
Portlander Hipster look.
Tourist- A button up Hawaiian shirt, a pair of
shorts (maybe a jacket because it’s cold during recess?)
and some fl ip fl ops.
Superhero- For those of us who love to sleep in past the
alarm, a simple shirt with a superhero logo on it (Spider-Man,
Superman, Batman, Captain America....) and a pair of jeans gives
the general idea without much eff ort.
Secret Identity- To take the last one a step further, put
your superhero shirt on under a button up shirt, for dramatic
eff ect you can unbutton the fi rst couple buttons so the logo shows
through. Add a “hello my name is ___” sticker with the name of
your secret identity and you’re good to go.

Next
week
is
November, which begins
my favorite part of the
year, Thanksgiving.
Thankfulness seems
to be at the forefront
of our minds this time
of year, when I stop to
think about the people
who make my life as full
and wonderful as it is;
the list could go on for
miles.
I like to take a pause
this time of year to
say “thank you,” to the
people who brighten my
day. It is my practice to
write one letter to one
person I’m thankful for
everyday in November,
and this year I’m inviting
you guys to join me.
It doesn’t have to be
Shakespeare’s sonnets, it
doesn’t even need to be
grammatically
correct
(mine sure aren’t). It just
needs to be genuine.

a moment to say thank
you goes a long way.
That said, not every-
one likes writing as much
as me, which is okay. Any
and every variation of this
project is welcome: fl ow-
ers, drawings, interpreta-
tive dance, anything you
want to do to encourage
someone and say thank
you.
If 30 people seems
overwhelming, try starting
with just one person a
week. My dream is to cover
Keizer in encouragement
and thankfulness; and I
think we can do it.
