Paper + Scissors = Fall snow
By LAUREN MURPHY
Of No Adults Allowed
When I was a kid, I used
to believe that hanging
paper snowfl akes in the
window would make it
snow. When December
came around my sister
and I would cut out
snowfl akes, hang them
in the window and wait
expectantly for snow;
which usually came two
months later.
Snow
days
are
awesome but I always
wanted snow on winter
break. If my childhood
theory is true, I need to
start hanging snowfl akes
in my window now if I
want a white December.
The book Snowfl akes,
by Cindy Higham is full
of diff erent snowfl ake
patterns for every season
of the year.
I’ve pulled out some
of the fall and Halloween
patterns for you guys
and I’m hoping you’ll
help me summon the
snow this year.
HOW TO MAKE A
FALL SNOWFLAKE:
The patterns in the
book were designed for
8.5x11 paper (standard
printer paper) If you’re
using paper large or small
you may need to adjust
the designs accordingly.
First you need to turn
your paper into a square.
Take the top left corner
and fold it down until the
edge is fl at.
Your paper should be
a triangle with an extra
rectangle hanging off the
side.
Cut the rectangle off .
Fold the triangle in
half to make a smaller
triangle.
Fold that triangle into
thirds (if it’s not even that’s
okay, it’ll add character).
Cut a straight line
across
the
bottom,
creating another triangle.
Now we can start
doing the fun stuff . Trace
the design on the triangle
below on to the front of
your triangle (you may
need to unfold it, that’s
okay)
Carefully cut out
around the outline. You
may need to ask an adult
to come help you – they
can look this time, we’ll
allow it.
When you’re done
cutting, unfold it to reveal
Antigrams
An anagram is a word or phrase spelled by rearranging
the letters of another word or phrase. Antigrams are words
that can be rearranged to have the opposite meaning.
FOR EXAMPLE:
MENTORS becomes MONSTER
NOW YOU TRY ONE:
UNITED becomes ______
your design. You can color
it if you’d like or leave it
white.
Finally, don’t forget to
hang it up in the window.
