Today in History
Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie
are shot to death by a Bosnian Serb nationalist during an
offi cial visit to the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo. The killings
sparked a chain of events that led to the outbreak of World
War I by early August. Bosnia and Herzegovina were
annexed by Austria-Hungary in 1908. The annexation had
angered Serbian nationalists, who believed the territories
should be part of Serbia. Nineteen-year-old Gavrilo Princip
was able to shoot the royal couple at point-blank range,
while they traveled in their offi cial procession, killing both
almost instantly.

“It speaks to the spirit of
who Keizer is and this city is
made up of people like this
who are out here every day
trying to live up to the same
dream,” Clark said. “This will
remind us every day that we
can never ever take for grant-
ed the freedom that we enjoy
in this moment and make sure
that it is something we pro-
tect, defend and pass on.”
Fenison encouraged all
those in attendance to take in-
spiration from her son.
“Have a compassionate
heart, love and accept people
just as they are, be passionate
in all you do and fi nd your
purpose or job,” Fenison said.
