Lady Celts receive all-conference awards
Four McNary girls basketball players received all Mountain Valley Conference recognition for their
outstanding play over the course of this season.
ATHLETE
of the Week
Abigail Hawley- Senior Wing: First-Team All-League.
Hawley was McNary’s top scoring threat this season, averaging 13.3 points per game. Hawley also
led the Celtics in steals (30) and three-point fi eld goals (25), proving herself to be one of the league’s
most athletic players. While her production on both ends of the fl oor was vital to McNary’s success,
her leadership was arguably even more important to this youthful squad.
What her coach (Elizabeth Doran) says:
“As a senior leader on our team, Abbie was our leading scorer, defensive enforcer and vocal leader
out on the fl oor this year. The last couple years Abbie had been in a more supporting role offensively,
but this year she confi dently stepped up and really owned the role of being one of our biggest offensive
threats. I am proud of Abbie for earning fi rst-team all-league honors. She defi nitely will be missed.”
Hawley
presented by
Leah Doutt- Sophomore Point Guard: Second-Team All-League.
Doutt was McNary’s most versatile player. She was was second on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg)
and rebounds (4.5 rpg). She also led the team in assists and blocked shots. With the ability to shoot the
ball from the outside and the quickness to get the hole, Doutt proved to be a nightmare for opposing
players to guard. But she also showed that she was also one of the best defenders for the Celtics.
What her coach says:
“Leah is one of the most skilled players in the league. She puts tons of pressure on the defense due
to her ability to shoot the three and get to the basket and fi nish around the rim. I would also argue that
Leah is one of the league’s best defenders. I constantly gave her the task of defending the opponent’s
biggest offensive threat and Leah would execute the defensive scout perfectly, frustrating the heck out
of opponents. Leah is only a sophomore and has so much upside. I am extremely fortunate to get to
coach her for two more years.”
SABELLA ALFARO
Senior at McNary High School
Alfaro was the only Celtic player in double-
Doutt
fi gures with 10 points in McNary’s playoff loss
to Tigard on Feb. 28.
“Sabella really stepped up and had a big
games for us,” McNary head coach Elizabeth
Sabella Alfaro- Senior Post: Honorable Mention.
Doran said.
Despite being undersized, Alfaro proved that she could still be one of the best front-court players in
the league. Alfaro was third on the in rebounding and scoring while also taking on the role of senior
leader with Hawley.
What her coach says:
“As a senior leader on our team, Sabella was a consistent inside presence for us. She always had
to defend kids a head taller than her, but that didn’t bother her one bit. She is a savvy and confi dent
defender that knows how to work early and use her quickness. Sabella’s work ethic, hustle and positive
attitude were exemplary throughout the two years I have been her coach. She truly will be missed.”
Alfaro ended the season averaging 6 points
per game and 3.2 rebounds per game.
Alfaro
Kennedy Buss- Sophomore Guard: Honorable Mention.
While she wasn’t a big-time scorer for the Celtics, Buss established herself as one of the best hustle
players in the conference. She led McNary in rebounds and was the top on-ball defender on the roster.
What her coach says:
“Kennedy is the workhorse of our team. She led the team in rebounding with 4.7 rpg and earned
us extra possessions all year off of hustle plays. In my eight years of coaching, she is the toughest kid
I’ve coached and I am looking forward to watching her game continue to develop over the next two
years.”
