Why love is in the air on Feb. 14
Valentine’s Day usually
makes people think of fl ow-
ers, chocolates and heart-
shaped love notes, but where
did Valentine’s Day come
from anyway?
During the reign of Ro-
man Emperor Claudius II, he
decided that marriage made
men weak. He thought that
people who were married
were bad soldiers, so he did
what any reasonable person
would’ve done; he outlawed
marriage.
This didn’t sit well with
the Roman people, they were
in love, they wanted to be
married! So a priest
named Valentine
took matters into
his own hands. He
started arranging
and marrying peo-
ple behind the Emper-
or’s back. When Claudius
(the Roman Emperor) found
out about this he was very an-
gry. Valentine was put in pris-
on and sentenced to death.
Valentine was a true ex-
ample of a hopeless roman-
tic, though. While he was in
jail, he fell in
love with
the jailer’s
daughter.
On Febru-
ary 14, the
day he died,
he sent his love
a letter and signed it,
“From your Valentine.”
In 496, the fi rst Valentine’s
Day was celebrated, it was
named after St. Valentine, the
man who died for love.
Nowadays, we celebrate
with chocolate hearts and
cute poems. It is a day for us
to look at the people in our
lives that we’re thankful for,
and the people that we love.
So be sure to remind the peo-
ple in your life that you love
them on this special day with
a kind word, a hug or even a
handmade gift. Even small
gestures can go a really long
way.
Putting love on the line
for your Valentine
What you’ll need:

Clothes pins
Pictures of people (or things you love)
Paper hearts
This craft is a simple
and easy way to show
your appreciation for the
special people in your life.
There is no right or
wrong way to do it, you
can have as many or as
few pictures as you would
like. You can add any vari-
ations you would like, I
wrote a poem on mine.
Mine was very simple.
I cut out 11 paper hearts,
some of them I glued to-
gether and I wrote on
others. I also made a pa-
per envelope and wrote a
poem.
This is a fun craft and
it makes a great gift. Make
sure you ask an adult for
help with scissors and
glue.
Simplicity is key to
showing your aff ection
The key to any good poem is to keep it
simple. Whether it’s for your sibling, your
What do you
friend, or even a parent, the most important

thing is to make sure it comes from the heart.
That said, sometimes it can be tricky fi g-
in love?
uring out what to say, below is a template for
a poem that you can send to any Valentine.

And that’s all there is to it! A noun is a per-
son, place, or thing. An adjective is a word
that describes a person place or thing. For
example:
To my special Valentine,
I love you because you’re funny (de-
scribes the person I’m talking about).
When I think about you I feel happy (de-
scribes how I feel).
I think that you’re amazing (describes the
person I’m talking about).
Which is why I want you to be my Valen-
tine.
