School board renews contract
for superintendent in 6-1 vote
By HERB SWETT
For the Keizertimes
The Salem-Keizer School Board re-
newed Superintendent Christy Perry’s
contract at a meeting Tuesday, Dec. 11.
The new contract will end June 30,
2021. Director Sheronne Blasi noted that
Perry did not ask for any pay increase
beyond what is provided in the current
contract.
The board’s vote on her contract was
6-1. Paul Kyllo, who cast the negative
vote, said the district was “getting good
results, not great results” for what it has
been paying Perry. He said he would have
voted for the extension if the vote had
been taken in June.
In other action, a proposal for Sa-
lem-Keizer School District funds to help
Howard Street Charter School move its
building was postponed. The board will
revisit the matter at its Jan. 15 board meet-
ing.
Nine people spoke from the audience
urging the funding. They argued that a
move from the current location, near
South Salem High School, would pro-
mote diversity in the charter school.
Director Marty Heyen moved to ap-
prove the funding, which is not a set
amount but would be determined by a
formula. Paul Dakopolos, attorney for the
school district, said that the district’s cur-
rent contract with HSCS will expire in
2022, so that a future board could be held
to the contract.
Most of the board members expressed
reservations about the proposal, largely
because of concerns for district fi nancial
limitations.
Heyen amended her motion to provide
a 15 percent increase for the remainder
of the current contract. The board voted
against the amended motion and sched-
uled further consideration of the issue for
the January meeting.
The board also approved a resolution
by the Oregon School Boards Association
to adopt the legislative priorities and pol-
icies recommended by the OSBA legis-
lative policy committee. It voted for the
OSBA resolution to amend the bylaws to
add a representative of the Oregon School
Board Members of Color Caucus to the
association’s board.
A Keizer business and a Keizer organi-
zation were honored in the Spotlight on
Success portion of the meeting. The Target
store at Keizer Station was named Busi-
ness Partner of the Month for donating
$125 in gift cards for Keizer Elementary
School to buy snacks for hungry students
and $500 in gift cards for the Emotional
Growth Classroom at the school.
The West Keizer Neighborhood Asso-
ciation was named Community Partner of
the Month for advocating sidewalk con-
struction on Delight Street next to the
school and for helping with landscaping
around Cummings Elementary School.
Two Oregon Department of Education
grants were approved. One for $271,112
funds career and technical education pro-
grams in the high schools. McNary High
School will receive $13,116 for automo-
tive mechanics technology, $3,607 for
business administration and management,
$3,279 for culinary arts, $2,000 for cin-
ematography and fi lm, and $2,000 for
graphic design.
Personnel actions approved by the
board included the following for the Mc-
Nary attendance area:
• Temporary full-time contracts for
Melissa Garcia at Keizer Elementary,
Catherine Staatz-Martinez at Gubser Ele-
mentary, and Villasenor Ortiz at Kennedy
Elementary.
• Resignation of Paul Goodwin from
McNary.
