Celt swimmers sweep Sprague
By MATT RAWLINGS
Of the Keizertimes
After struggling in their
opening meet of the season
against South Salem, the Mc-
Nary High School swim team
put together a much better
overall performance in their
following showing against
Sprague.
The Celtic girls team dom-
inated the Olympians with a
112-54 victory, while the Mc-
Nary boys squeaked out a 84-
81 win at the Kroc Center on
Thursday, December 6.
“It’s pretty crazy how much
improvement we showed be-
tween our fi rst meet and this
meet,” McNary head coach
Casey Lewin said. “We looked
much better in the water and
had a lot of kids swim their best
times.”
Both McNary relay teams
set the tone right out of the
gate by getting victories in the
200-yard individual medley re-
lay to start the meet.
The boys team of Kyle
Hooper, Harrison Vaughn,
Jabez Rhoades and Wyatt Sher-
wood put together a winning
time of 1:56.06. The girls squad
of Alex Beard, Paris Boyd, Isa-
bella Beard and Alyssa Garvey
touched the line in 2:03.03.
Garvey — who swam the
anchor in both the 200-IM
and 200-freestyle relay victo-
ries for the Celtics —continued
her huge night as she also came
away with wins in the 50-free
(27.30) and 100-free (1:00.85).
“After the meet, I was just
really proud of what we had
accomplished. It was really nice
to come out with the win and
know that we all swam real-
ly hard,” Garvey said. “For me
personally, I was just ready to
go at it. I wanted to do better
that I did in the fi rst meet, so
I worked really hard in practice
and I felt more prepared.”
Garvey wasn’t the only Celt-
ic girl to win multiple individ-
ual events.
Alex Beard won the 200 IM
with a time of 2:24.00. But her
most impressive performance
came in the 500-free where she
blew away the competition by
fi nishing with a time of 5:42.59
— more than a minute faster
than the next closes competitor.
Isabella Beard was victo-
rious in the 100-breaststroke
(1:14.29) and Eloisa Moreno what we did,” Lewin said.
Hooper got one of two indi-

vidual victories on the night for

“The biggest thing we saw the Celtic boys with his win in
today was the change in con- the 200 IM (2:07.62). Sprague’s
fi dence level,” Lewin said. “We Alex Feng stayed close for the
