A
PARK,
continued from Page A1
to be done in parks and help
like this is crucial. For my guys
to come in here, three or four
of them, it would take a week
just to remove the wood chips.
We are going to, I hope, have
it done in half a day. The kids
will repaint the entire shelter
in a few hours and that would
take one of our employees a
day or more.”
Matt Lawyer, a member
of the Keizer Parks Adviso-
ry Board, was helping lead
the volunteer effort alongside
Johnson. The parks board was
a driving force behind getting
a parks services fee instituted
to bolster maintenance and
improvement efforts, but there
is a long backlog of parks-re-
lated work to chip away at.
It means volunteers are still
needed to make the most of
available resources.
“This project, specifi cally,
speaks to the pride, spirit and
volunteerism. We got the parks
fee put in place, but these are
the type of volunteer activities
that we want to encourage
people to do. Especially stu-
dents at McNary,Whiteaker
and Claggett Creek,” Lawyer
said. “I think it’s still a very
important part of why Keiz-
er is awesome and the fee is a
mechanism to continue doing
these sorts of projects because
now the parks department can
pay to sponsor them.”
While students represented
all corners of the three schools,
McNary’s Air Force Junior
Reserve Offi cer Training
Corps and Latino Club made
concerted efforts to bring out
their groups’ members.

MAKE IT:
Giant soft
pretzels
PREP TIME:
About 30 minutes
C
INGREDIENTS:
1 tablespoon yeast
1/2 cup warm water
1 teaspoon honey
1-1/3 cup fl our
1 teaspoon salt
1 adult to help you
with the oven
UTENSILS:
Oven,
small bowl,
mixing spoon,
medium-size bowl,
cutting board, sprinkled
with fl our,
nonstick baking sheet,
measuring cups and
spoons
D
A and B: Students remove
wood chips from around a
play structure.
WHAT TO DO:
1. Preheat the oven to 325°F.
6. Put the dough on the cutting board and knead it like you are
playing with clay. Knead it into one big ball.
2. Put the yeast in a small
bowl with the water and hon-
ey. Stir a little, then let the mix-
ture sit for 5 minutes.
7. Break off a piece of dough that’s about the size of a big
gumball or superball. Use your hands to roll it into a skinny snake.
3. Mix the fl our and salt to-
gether in a medium bowl.
C: Another group hauls debris
to a container for removal.
4. After the 5 minutes is up,
check on the yeast mixture. It
should be bigger than before
and a little bubbly. Add this
mixture to the fl our and salt
mixture.
D: Aeri Pierson and Kayla
Amos paint a picnic shelter.
KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. Howald
5. Stir everything together. Use a spoon to start. Finish with
your hands. The dough is ready when it’s still a little crumbly and
fl aky.
8. Twist the snake into a medium-size pretzel shape, and put
it on the cookie sheet. Do this with all the dough, making 12
pretzels.
9. Top it off! Sprinkle some salt over the top, or cinnamon and
sugar if you want a sweet treat. Melting cheese over the top is
another option. Poppy seeds or sesame seeds give you more to
munch.
10. Bake your pretzels for 10 minutes. Let them cool and take
a bite.
