Braiden Copeland ran for
239 yards and three TDs to
go along with eight tackles,
two sacks and an intercep-
tion to lead Whiteaker (3-0)
to a 20-14 win over Straub on
Wednesday, Sept. 26.
Straub scored late in the
second quarter to tie the
game at 6-6, and a great kick-
off pinned the Wolverines on
their own 10 yard line, but the
Wolverines wasted no time
retaking the lead.
Copeland completed a pass
to Ty Borde to the 20, and on
the ensuing play Copeland ran
through a big hole and evaded
six tacklers to go 80 yards for
the score.
A short third quarter TD
run by Copeland extended
the lead to 20-6.
A long TD run by Straub
quarterback Jimmy Lathen
drew Straub to within six
points, but Whiteaker’s run
game allowed the Wolverines
to control the ball and run out
the clock.
Offensive
coordinator
Marcus Larimer seemed to al-
ways have the right play called,
allowing Whiteaker to domi-
nate time of possession and
keep Straub’s dangerous play-
makers off the fi eld.
“Braiden played like a big

“I never kicked in my races
because I was too tired,” Bren-
nan said. “If I hadn’t (kicked),
I wouldn’t have gotten under
18 (minutes).”

he and Hunter (Ruberto, who

had so much success not only
because of how hard they ran,
but because of how hard the
O line played in front of them.
Those kids (Jacob Hurst,
Dominic Hughes, Cristian
Garcia, Joey Lenhart, Will
Green and Angel Munguia)
deserve every bit as much
credit as the kids who get the
stats. And our D line was just
as good.”
Whiteaker’s lines are very
well coached under the tute-
lage of Jason Walling (D line)
and Zachary Drake (O line).
Larimer says the defense is
coming together under de-
fensive coordinator Luke At-
wood.
“Straub has dangerous play-
makers, and Coach Atwood

“He starts out a little
quicker than I do but by the
fi rst mile I can see him and
I just try to keep with him,”
Brennan said of Ethan. “If he
starts slowing down I’ll obvi-
ously go faster but that hasn’t
happened this season. The goal
is to beat him but that’s going
to be hard.”
Ethan backed up his 17:50
by fi nishing the Nike Portland
XC in 17:55.
“Those are two guys that
show up everyday to get bet-
ter,” McNary head coach Da-
vid Holcomb said. “Whether
their body is not feeling good
or it’s their best day, they show
up and push each other and
push the other varsity guys. I
put together a great plan to
limit those kids. Copeland,
Munguia, Damon (Thorn-
ton), Hunter (Ruberto) and
Kyler (Donahue) all made
big plays that show up in the
stats, but Brody (Roth), Logan
(Bowlby) and Ty (Borde) had
important containment jobs
that show up in the box score
only where it matters most—
the fi nal score. It’s always fun
to win, but it’s especially satis-
fying when so many kids con-
tribute.”
Claggett wins big
